Set Up Quick Access to Your Gmail Media
Posted by Adam Pash at 8:00 AM on July 10, 2008
Weblog Daily Tech Update details how to use the Quick Links feature available in the recently released Gmail Labs to create quick access links to the media attachments in your Gmail account. The Quick Links tool makes it dead simple to turn any advanced search into a quick sidebar link, and the post details a few advanced searches to create Quick Links specifically for video and audio. I've also added my own YouTube videos Quick Link for any email containing a YouTube link (I simply used http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=* as my search). If you've taken advantage of the Gmail Labs Quick Links feature, let's hear how you're using it in the comments. For even more advanced Gmail media wrangling, check out previously mentioned Xoopit.

Now if I can reorder sidebar sections to elevate Quick Links above Labels, it would be great. ;)

This is a great feature I didn't think I have it in Lab page.
I can now have a link that imitates a label of unread emails instead of typing l:^u to search for all unread emails in the inbox and all labels.

I have wanted a feature like this in Gmail for so long! And I never would have noticed it if it wasn't for this piece - I'm not used to poking my head into the Labs section very often yet. Maybe I should start getting in the habit.

I use the same searches but as filters to add a label to each message to identify each attachment quickly from the list view.
Matches: {filename:aiff filename:wav filename:mp3 filename:wma filename:aac filename:ogg filename:ale filename:alac filename:mp4}
Do this: Apply label "/Music"
Matches: {filename:pdf filename:ps filename:wk1 filename:wk2 filename:wk3 filename:wk4 filename:wk5 filename:wki filename:wks filename:wku filename:lwp filename:mw filename:xls filename:ppt filename:pps filename:doc filename:wks filename:wps filename:wdb filename:wri filename:rtf filename:ans filename:txt filename:odt filename:ods filename:odp filename:odg filename:odf}
Do this: Apply label "/Documents"
Matches: {filename:avi filename:flv filename:mpg filename:mpeg filename:mp4 filename:mov filename:rm filename:wmv}
Do this: Apply label "/Movies"
Matches: filename:jpg {photo photos pic pics picture pictures attachment attached}
Do this: Apply label "/Pictures"
With these filters, it gives a bit more clarity to the paperclip attachment icon. I know you can use the greasemonkey script to show icons instead but it does not work well with multiple attachment and across computer.

The major benefit of this over Xoopit is obviously that you don't need to hand over your login information for your Gmail account. Granted Xoopit is way more fancy than these simple searches, but it's really a matter of preference.

Quick links = labels and/or filters, no? I don't see the difference. Please someone enlighten me!

@Nuclear Moose: Yeah, it's sorta redundant, but I don't like having a ton of labels, so having quick searches helps keep my labels drop down small, but still gives me quick access.
I found that this guys code is kinda flawed. Using his video search, it will give you results that have no attachment, but mention .wmv files.

@Nuclear Moose: Yep - but to get the power of the searches described above you need to do some tweaking... Which Adam has helpfully written about here: [lifehacker.com]
...and then you don't have that extra box on the sidebar.

Thanks for your comments, guys. I'll check out Adam's article.
Since I use BetterGMail 2.x and have the Folders4Gmail enabled, I don't have an out of control list of labels, but that said, I DO have a LOT of labels! I treat the labels more like tags, though. Perhaps this is just one of those six-of-one-a-half-dozen-of-another situations where a label is a tag is a quick link?

Here is a stumper for you guys. I have this search in my quick links=
[mail.google.com]
It searches for all email from my work email in the inbox or trash (work spam) that I rec'v today.
It works fine but the only way I could make a persistent search for "today" was thru the advanced search function.
So when I click my quick-link, I then have to click "Hide search options" from the advanced option thingy.
Does anybody know some java or something I could put in there to suppress the search options?
