Rainbow Folders Creates Super-Customised Folders for Easy Navigation
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 1:43 AM on July 10, 2008
Windows only: Rainbow Folders, a free interface-tweaking utility, is a great tool for de-cluttering a desktop, directory, or other work spaces where distinct colours and shapes help your mind sort out what goes where. Rather than offering just four or five colour labels, Rainbow Colours lets you use Photoshop-like hue and saturation values to make distinct shades, and lets you choose between classic, XP, or Vista-style stand-up folders to further distinguish your stuff. The app can also add mouse-over tooltip text to a folder, in case your visual memory needs a quick refresher. Rainbow Folders is a free download for Windows systems only. Note: If the main link below is overwhelmed, you can grab the install package from Freeware Files.

Ah... I gave this a run, and at least in Vista Ultimate, it seems to do exactly nothing.

I think the best program for this need is Folder Marker Pro: [www.foldermarker.com] There's also a free version available.
The colorized folders could be exported so that the folders are colorized on systems without Folder Marker installed.

Must have.

It doesn't seem to run in the background. It just changes the actual icon of the folder so that the colors remain when the program is closed.

How much memory does this take up in the background?

My favorite is Folderico. It's free and even portable (though you don't get the context-menu if you're using a portable version).
I got Folder Marker Pro for free from Giveaway of the Day last year, and I uninstalled it because I preferred Folderico.

Folder Marker Pro doesn't do anything this can't do.
And you can move/copy the folder just the same since the icon is in the folder and the desktop.ini has a relative path.
I prefer Folderico and use IconX by Johannes Plachy for changing individual files.

@joelena...Folderico looks promising but I don't see where it is compatible with Vista. I did install it on my xp computer..will see how it works out.
I've been using icolorfolder on xp. I haven't checked to see if it is compatable with Vista

Does anyone know of a utility which will vary the size of a folder icon based on folder activity ?
The principle is that my most used folders are large (and optionally at the top of the list view) whilst those not used at all are teensy-weensy (small for you non-techies)
Anyone ?

Very interesting. I usually try to avoid utilities that aren't really necessary, but I couldn't resist this one.

Isn't this cute? I think if I wanted to change folder icons I would've just went through the usual windows way. What would truly be innovative, is if you could change the color of the folder's NAME. By default, it seems only encrypted folders and compressed files get a different color. How lame..

@umpitygrumpity: The problem with the Windows way is that it's a pain in the ass and not very convenient. Also, you have to make your own icons with colors beforehand.
Xentient Labels seems to do what you want(color names), though through highlighting it seems. Not freeware though.

Adding coloured labels is one of my favorite, long-standing, features of the Mac OS... I just wish you could toggle to make the colours invisible... Sometimes, using coloured lables can make it much harder to find stuff which isn't in your labelled methodology! Great to see this comming to Windows... Would be fab if it was a effortless to integrate as it is on the Mac!

Some knows something to mark folders like on Mac's finder? The whole line, like a marker pen. Especially on Explorer's detail/list views? Most of them don't work on Vista 64bit and are ugly.

Anyone know of a program that lets you colorize the actual explorer windows/backgrounds depending on the address?
Being a web developer and having to work with multiple windows open with a different server in each one it would be great to have some kind of color coding such as "C:\* = green", "\\live server\* = red."

"Unique"? The Mac OS has been doing this since System 7 in the early 90's. About time the Windows world caught up.
