Mininova Adds Remote BitTorrent Downloads
Posted by Adam Pash at 4:00 AM on July 10, 2008

Popular BitTorrent tracker Mininova has unveiled a new bookmarking feature that makes it easy to start a BitTorrent download on your home computer from anywhere. The new feature works by creating a personal RSS feed of all of your bookmarks. Since most popular BitTorrent clients support subscribing to an RSS feed of torrents, that means that each time you bookmark a torrent on Mininova, your BitTorrent client will automatically start downloading it. All you have to do is subscribe to your personal feed and get bookmarking. This is a very clever feature, but if you'd prefer even more control of your BitTorrent downloads when you're away from your main PC, check out how to remote control uTorrent or Transmission over the internet.

You should read all the lifehacker articles about making and maintaining a home server! It's totally worth it. My brother and I set up a server running xp pro, and use utorrent's webui to download torrents, then transfer those torrents to a home computer by downloading them the same way you would from a website! It's great.
Really.
I mean it.

This is great! All though I'd prefer to just leave a note on my phone to remind me to download it later and I don't leave my computer on all the time.
If I did though I would love it.
I like the way LH chooses Ubuntu for picture =)

great feature. even if you don't keep your computer on all the time, this will allow you to keep a list of all the torrents you intend to download, when you do start utorrent up the downloads will begin. For the RSS feed, at least on the 1.8 bets version, you can decide for each feed if you want to start downloads automatically, helpful for this feature.

This is brilliant. Probably very simple to implement but mostly negates the need for a home web server for torrent downloads.
Does anyone have a solution for transferring downloaded torrents to itunes via podcast?

If you have a home Linux server, you can SSH into the server, open up GNU Screen, start a fresh screen session, and use the original bit torrent command line application to download a torrent:
$ssh username@serverIPAddressOrDomainName
---login
$screen
---you can press ctrl-a, c to create a screen
---you can press ctrl-a, n to switch between opened screens
$cd /folder/to/put/the/download
$btdownloadcurses '[TorrentTracker.com]'
---Wait.
In Ubuntu, you can install screen and btdownloadcurses like so:
$sudo apt-get install bittorrent screen
I think that aria2 and transmission-cli will work using this method as well (instead of btdownloadcurses).

Ah, but can I start a download on the computer of someone I don't like with this? Just think of the wickedness you could cause?

Thats quite innovative. Amazing what illegal download sites come up with.

@SeanOHara, only if you were on that persons computer at some point or tell the person to subscribe to your feed. I can make a website and tell you to download a virus. Big whoop.
@davidron, that's way way too much effort. Try using rtorrent.
I use rtorrent that watches a folder for new downloads and then I have a cron that checks my desktop for torrents and sends it over to that folder on my server. Downloading now takes zero effort :-D

For command-line torrenting, I use ssh+screen+rtorrent. Very customizable, low resource utilization, and accessible from any ssh client.
Now I'm off to see if rtorrent supports RSS subscribing.

@ThomasG33K: Torrent Trackers are definitely not "Illegal download sites".
That would be like blaming Ford when some criminal decides to rob a bank and run away in a Ford Mondeo :)
Why the hell did Ford make a car and facilitate a crime ? Lets sue them!!
