Aeon Gives Your XBMC Style
Posted by Adam Pash at 7:30 AM on July 10, 2008

Any platform running XBMC: AEON transforms your Xbox Media Centre with a beautiful new and friendly interface. Installing AEON is simply a matter of dragging it into your XBMC's skins directory and then getting started. Whether your running XBMC on your Mac (a fork of which has just been renamed to Plex), your classic Xbox, or your thumb drive, AEON is an excellent tool to improve the look and feel. If you'd like to try XBMC on your Mac with a more social flair, check out previously mentioned Boxee.

Anyone have experience with this in Standard Def 4x3? I love my XBMC, and I don't have an HDTV...but this design looks amazing.

FWIW: I use Aeon on my xbox and with the full 720p backdrop set there is a noticeable pause when changing the menu from say Movies to Games when it loads the new backdrop. Looks great in 1080i though!

@ajamison: Standard def 4:3 looks great as well, you just have to learn to squint to read the text :\
(If your tv has component input though, you can get cables for your xbox for $10-20 that will let you enable 720/1080i though, but I haven't tried that on an SD tv)

Oh and I was never able to get the USB XBMC distro to work properly. I tried it on 4 different machines and it had different issues in the boot process on each of them. Not sure why, as it is based off of Ubuntu, which works on all those same machines just fine.

@inthepit: Well, as far as I know the Windows version is the least completed. It's true though that it really doesn't get the recognition it deserves. I would almost say the same about the Linux version though, as it is the most complete of the ports, both the Mac and Windows versions are forked from it.

There's a lot of problem using Aeon with OSXBMC. The scrolling is buggy and you get stuck in the settings menu. You can exit the settings menu, but the second you move your mouse, it shoves you back in. I managed to get into the Movies menu, and switched to poster view, at which point, the posters just kept scrolling to the left at a ridiculously fast pace. I can understand why this is still in alpha.
It shows a lot of promise though!
PS: Anyone want to send me a Boxee invite? ;)

@dombutchello: Ignore what I just posted. Aeon just gets wonky when you try to use a mouse. Using the arrow keys, everything works wonderfully!

I use Meedio for my HTPC... specifically the theme "meedioVintage", which was inspired by the Aeon theme for XMBC. Check it out: [www.meedios.com]
Here's a screenshot of the author's upcoming theme, Chrome: [pce.hostili.com]
Meedio takes a lot of tinkering and configuring to get it setup the way you want it, but it's worth it in the end.

Anyone got this working in 1080i on an Xbox with no stuttering? I really wanted to use it, but it just wasn't as smooth as the default theme.
Also, the controls when actually playing a video were severely out of wack for me, nowhere close to the originals and barely legible on my screen. Don't know if it was my setup or Aeon itself.
Anyone got any tips to get this working well on a standard-issue Xbox?

before anyone downloads this, please note that the system requirements include a widescreen tv. maybe everyone else in the world has one now but I don't... :\

@yug23: yeah, it is written for BIG Hi-Def Widescreen TVs. Once it is stable there will be other versions or options to scale.

Once they get hardware acceleration for h.264 nailed down for XMBC, my HTPC is so running it.

just tried it on xbox on my standard definition tv. looked pretty nice but the text was pretty small in the settings menus. when i tried to change my skin back to project mayhem III i realised that there's no way to actually do that through the aeon skin. the appearance menu isn't there. i had to delete it via ftp and then it went straight back to original skin. just a heads up for anyone trying to change back from aeon.

I happen to have a widescreen lcd display, and it looks fantastic but still has quite a few bugs... I'd hold off on using it fulltime until it develops a bit further.
The background quality is amazing. When I attempted to upload my own backgrounds, the image files did not load even after tinkering with different formats. Again, not perfectly stable, but showing incredible potential for HDTV wide screen fans...
