USB Flash Drive Manager Backs Up Thumb Drives
Posted by Lifehacker US Edition at 11:30 PM on July 9, 2008

Windows only: Microsoft USB Flash Drive Manager is a desktop utility that backs up and restores data from USB storage devices. Select files or entire drives to back up with the Flash Drive Manager. If you use the same flash drive for a variety of purposes and need to rotate the data on it frequently, the USB Flash Manager can create backup profiles to expedite swapping the drive data. The USB Flash Drive Manager is a free download for Windows XP only.

It's a shame they don't have something like this for Vista.
Of course, PortableAppsMenu has it's own backup feature which works well enough for my purposes

I was using SyncToy, then realised that all I was ever doing was just backing up the whole USB drive to my PC. Hence, now I just delete the old backup and copy over the content again to the same folder. I might give this a go though...

Wouldn't SyncToy be a good choice for this too? It looks like it gives a bit more control over the modes of syncing (echo, subscribe, etc).

Looking at the docs (from 2005), it mentions only 4GB USB drives, what if you carry 8GB drives like myself. Can it handle it? Also, what if I wanted to try it on a 750GB USB external drive? Would it just blow up ?

I use Toucan (Portable App) to back up my USB drive. I use the Update feature which updates existing backed-up files and copies new ones to my backup folder.
Simple. Clean. Easy.

How about NTBackup? It's free, available on all XP systems(don't know about Vista) and great for backing up the whole drive and lets you selectively restore files.
It's dead simple.

WTF: Tried to install, M$ tells me to get .NET. Huh? Can you stil run M$ update and not have .NET? Ok, I get .NET, keeps telling me I need .NET. Bye bye. Off to synctoy.

@Nepkarel: Yeah, Synctoy requires .NET, too. Get used to it. It's a M$ thing.

Just curious, does anyone know what window app they could be using (and what it does)? I see an extra button left of the Minimize.

@Captain Bringdown: It is a button added from UltraMon that changes the window to the next monitor.

I don't think that SyncToy V2.0 requires .NET, might be worth a shot.

Just a note - SyncToy 2.0 DOES require .NET Framework 2.0.

CTRL-A, CTRL-C, ALT-TAB, CTRL-V :)
but if you really need a program to do it for you, use DSynchronize or Toucan.
