Foxmarks Gets Selective Bookmark Syncing
Posted by Gina Trapani at 3:59 AM on July 9, 2008

Firefox only: Our favourite bookmark syncing Firefox extension, Foxmarks, can now sync select sets of bookmarks to certain computers you set up, like at home or at the office. To get started with selective syncing in Foxmarks, log onto My Foxmarks with your usual login, and in the Tools menu, choose "Manage Sync Profiles." Assign bookmarks to your sync profiles—like family bookmarks to the Home profile and office links to the Work profile. Then, on each computer you use Foxmarks on, make sure you've got the latest version 2.1.0.12 installed in Firefox. In the settings dialog, on the Profiles tab, choose which profile that browser instance should sync. While Foxmarks doesn't sync anything else of your Firefox user profile other than bookmarks—the way Google Sync used to, and Mozilla Weave does—this is still a really useful feature for compartmentalising your bookmarks and making sure sensitive or personal links only show up on the computers you want them on.

Yes!! I've been wanting this for a long time. I want some of my bookmarks on my work computer and vice versa. The problem for me is that I didn't want all of my work related links on my home machines.

@superbryant:
my thoughts exactly lol this is why I have been hesitant to adopt foxmarks and now I am going to start syncing. What do you all recommend, foxmarks for Mozilla Weave?

No matter what I do, I can't seem to sync! I set it all up, enter my password, press Synchronize Now, nothing happens! I go to my.foxmarks.com and it tells me that I have no bookmarks and that I might be having a problem with the tool. Duh.

That has been on my wishlist for ages now! I am happy that they've made it possible. Seperating work, personal and mixed access bookmarks is simply great!

I'm a big fan of Foxmarks, but this isn't really anything I need, but nice none the less. What i'd really like to see is the ability to have Foxmarks carry over the settings for my extentions, i.e. NoScript sites, etc.

foxmarks is a lifesaver even if you dont need to sync computers. Foxmarks is great also for backing up bookmarks as well as for checking your bookmarks from anywhere on the go. You can just go to my.foxmarks.com(ithink) and login and see ur bookmarks from anywhere, great for sharing links with friends.

YAY! I happily dl'd Foxmarks the first time LH wrote about it...and then spent an hour cleaning off the bookmarks from home I didn't want at work. I'll be making use of this one right away! Thanks, Gina!

I'm pretty sure this update was programmed after Mrs. Foxmark caught wind of Mr. Foxmark's "female anatomy" links and forced him to do it.

Finally! I was getting tired of deleting all my pr0n and World of Warcraft bookmarks at work everytime I sync'd up.

Warning: I installed the new Foxmarks -- it crashes my Firefox every time it attempts to synch bookmarks. I mean every time.
I'm a bit at a loss for what to do now -- I'm thinking it's a good time to try Weave. :-(

@VayaConQueso: Just you apparently, I unstalled the new foxmarks early this morning and have been syncing all day with no issues.
Maybe your crashes are being caused by another extension. Do you have any other syncing extensions installed?

Now only if this could be extended to other browsers too...

@jglessner:
Agreed. I installed foxmarks a week ago and have used it to restore bookmarks a number of times already. Received the updated version on multiple computers today and have had no crashes.
I too was wondering if I should go foxmarks or weave. I didn't try weave, but foxmarks covers my needs. If weave is built into 4.0 I can make the switch at that point in time.

Perfect! Now I can keep my wife's bookmarks backed up. She only needs about 1/8 the bookmarks that I use. This is perfect.

@jglessner: You're right - Foxmarks was not the culprit. I'm in the process of narrowing down the problem...I'll won't be so fast to comment next time.

Great. Been needing this for a while as I want to keep my mac bookmarks separate from my pc ones.

BEWARE;
Unless I am doing something wrong, you can't switch between profiles on the same computer. I tried to and lost a bunch of bookmarks. Fortunately, I have my bookmarks backed up, but it could have been catastrophic considering how much I rely on my bookmarks.
Has anyone else been able to toggle between foxmarks profiles within the same browser?

@VayaConQueso: I thought that Foxmarks was also the reason my firefox was constantly crashing too. If I disabled it the crashes stopped. I use Foxmarks all day long for research so ended up downgrading FF so I could carry on using it. I'd be interested to hear if you ever nail the problem, I dont have the time or patience at work(windows) and don't have issues at home (ubuntu).

Foxmarks is the greatest. I am able to sync Windoze PC's and Linux Ubuntu versions of Firefox at work and at home. Before it was really tricky to do manually.
Greatest FF addon.

The Foxmarks restore feature that is found within "My Foxmarks" is quite useful for an "oops moment." Similar to the windows system restore, you can restore to previous settings.

@VayaConQueso: You may consider trying to create a new Foxmarks account, then uploading your links to that, then deleting your other account. I was getting some mysterious sync errors with Foxmarks in recent days, and through much experimentation I figured out that somehow I had corrupted (for lack of a better term) my online Foxmarks account.
But I set up a new one, uploaded my .html bookmarks file, and voila, back in business. Then I deleted my old Foxmarks account.

After using this.... it doesn't seem like it has the functionality that it needs yet.
The biggest thing for me is that I use the bookmarks toolbar all the time. I want to use an entirely different set of bookmark toolbar bookmarks, and oyu can only select individual bookmarks, not entire sets for the toolbar.

Okay, so there are some caveats to how this works. First, from what I can tell, your bookmarks toolbar can't be different in the two seperate profiles. Any changes you make in one profile occurs in the other...or they are merged.
Secondly, you can't delete bookmarks in one profile and expect them to be there in the other profile. You can only uncheck them in the the profile settings of the foxmarks page.

@VayaConQueso: As far as I can tell Foxmarks is also crashing my firefox 3. It is stable as a rock if I disable the extension, but liable to crash every 5 minutes if it is enabled.
