Cabos Does Lightweight Peer-to-Peer
Posted by Adam Pash at 7:00 AM on July 9, 2008

Windows/Mac only: Free, open-source application Cabos is a peer-to-peer file sharing application with an emphasis on minimalism. That means that unlike other popular P2P apps that run on the Gnutella network like LimeWire or previously mentioned FrostWire, Cabos is completely stripped down and bloat free. Granted, you've probably moved on to downloading files with BitTorrent for most of your file-sharing needs, but for the occasional one-off download, an old-school peer-to-peer app like Cabos is always nice to have in the toolbox.

I still won't stick something like this straight onto my machine. Goes onto a VirtualMachine first, scanned for Hateware, and tested before moving any files.
I wonder how many registry entries it produces. Anyone know if Cabos is worth picking up?

I mean absolutely no offense by this, but I'm surprised at how many people apparently still use P2P. I thought it was dead for sure.

@jopari: Why would you think it was dead, out of curiosity? I mean, you do realize that even bittorrent is P2P, right?

@amaranthinenight: True, I meant to say I thought the Gnutella network was no longer used, mostly due to the overwhelming amount of spyware and such. Obviously I was wrong.

"Cabos is completely stripped down and bloat free"
Still it's using Java, so I'll pass.
Try Soulseek for the occasional mp3 ;)

I mainly use Transmission (Mac) for downloading torrents.
But when I do need a single file, (like mentioned above), I stick with Cabos.
Its lightweight, and free. And doesn't contain the word Wire in it.
However it is ugly as hell, luckily I don't use it much.
Another app I used before Cabos was Poisoned, which integrated Ares, Gnutella, and three other networks into one app. A big plus was it had Ares functionality, but the minuses outweighed that one plus. Ares rarely connected, and if it did, it had a hard time downloading. Gnutella would always connect, but would display false user numbers... It was also ugly as hell.
Good thing Transmission is sexy skinable (well, so is every mac app, but who wants to skin apps that have 10 users?)

Does anyone else use Rapidshare for downloads? I find it's faster than torrents and spamless, unlike P2P. It's great, especially if you like getting full albums of music instead of individual songs. Also excellent for finding cracked software and movies. Only trouble is that with large downloads the Free account gets irritating. I'm thinking of going Premium but we'll see. Only other thing is when you download a password-protected file and there's no password provided. That hurts.

@TwistedLogic - i use rapidshare for everything. it's much more anonymous than p2p or torrents. premium accounts are relatively cheap. but the best part is the speed. i have a slowish connection but i get 500kbps on everything i download with rapidshare, even the oldest, most obscure things you could possible want. no more poorly seeded files! just find the right forum and you're home free :)

@TwistedLogic: Yea I love it to, it's my first call for CD's if I can't find it there I use torrents. I haven't managed to find anything other than albums though :( [www.orkut.com] is a good place to find links to download albums, a google acount is needed tho.

@Anrui: Comes from a SourceForge page. You would be hard pressed to find a spyware infested program on there.

Being a mac user, 2 years ago there were not many options to choose from, in order to connect to the gnutella network. At that time, I tested limewire, poisoned, and others mac p2p applications on my ibook, and Cabos was, and still is, by far, the most stable, fast, and light of the applications. I still use it from time to time. The only downside of this, is caused by the gnutella network, that provides some "crappy" files in the search results, but they are pretty easy to spot.
For p2p I only use cabos & transmission (for torrents).
BTW, excuse me for my poor english

solarseek was by far the best gnutella client...
it's unfortunate the developers ran out of steam.
