Gmail Adds Multiple Session Info and Remote Signout
Posted by Gina Trapani at 7:33 AM on July 8, 2008

If you're signed into your Gmail account from several computers at once, a note at the bottom of your inbox will tell you that, Google announces. Gmail's new Remote Signout and Info feature is getting rolled out to Gmail accounts slowly, and will display the IP addresses of all the computers where you're currently signed into Gmail below your inbox (shown above). You can also sign out of Gmail from a remote computer using the new feature—check out a screenshot of that, after the jump.
When you click the Details link on the note below your inbox, you'll see this:

The new features haven't hit my Gmail account(s) yet. How about you? Let us know in the comments.

This sounds like a very useful feature. Any ideas if this will work retroactively and if so how far back?

BTW, I did not get the new features yet but I always seem to get them after a lot of others...

At first, I thought this would be what I have been waiting for, but it is not. I would like to be able to sign into multiple accounts at once without having to think about. I have multiple accounts I use for different things. Anyone know of a way to do this other than the extension mentioned here a bit ago?

I havent gotten this either yet. I cant wait to get it though. I'm always leaving my gmail logged on at places. This will be helpful to remind me to sign out of my account.

Nothing yet for me but that's no too surprising given that I still don't have Labs. (Even with the URL tweak, which appears to do nothing.)
Possibly a location (Alberta, Canada) issue?

@jkrell:
How about a Greasemonkey script?

amazingly I don't see it yet despite the fact that I tend to get new features pretty quickly. this it the first time lifehacker has posted a gmail feature that I didn't find when I went to check for it.

You really should look into Cookiepie, which was featured on LifeHacker rather recently. I've installed it into Firefox, and I've been using it to keep my work and personal email accounts open at the same time. I've run into a few issues with gmail chat, but I generally sign out of them anyway.

@bdawg923: Thanks, I installed that and it'll work for now. It still is not what I am looking for, but I suspect it is as close as I will ever get (along with what I already have set up). What I would like is for you to be able to have a main screen/dashboard in Gmail that can monitor and send e-mail from your other Gmail accounts. I have my other accounts set to forward copies to my main account, but that is not exactly a seamless way to do it.
Oh well, thanks for pointing me to the script.

This comes a couple months too late, had my account messed with and someone sent emails using my account. Took a couple password changes to get them out, couldn't speed up the process by kicking them off though.

I suppose this may solve the annoyingly repetitive password prompt by Thunderbird for gmail accounts using IMAP.

@Anrui: That is the extension they mentioned here that is not of interest to me -- I do not want to have to switch tabs, etc. The Greasemonkey script is a tad bit better, but not much.
@tohanry: Yeah, that's the same thing I need it for. Like I said, my workaround right now makes use of forwarding and auto-labeling. I actually even have it set up so that mail sent to a certain account automatically gets added as a task in Remember the Milk (it is far easier to remember an e-mail address I set up than the wacky one RTM provides).

I have it. The only thing it adds is one line at the bottom of one's gmail page with a Details link. I got the labs features fairly quickly as well, but I'm still waiting on officially getting the new iGoogle. Actually, I tried the new iGoogle (by signing up) and quickly switched back to the old one. Adium serves as my IM client and connects to my AIM, gchat, and facebook accounts so I have no need for a browser-based IM client. As far as I can tell the other main new feature is basically a movement of the tabs (which I don't use) from the top of the screen to the left side.

Doesn't this also mean a hacker could see you're online as well and remotely log you out before you could change your password to return it your control?

I have the new feature, but it always says that I'm logged on from one other location. Except the thing is, the other location has the same IP as my computer, and I'm sure I'm not logged on anywhere else in my house. I checked the logs and all of the activity is originating from my IP.

Works for me. The GMail blog says it's being rolled out for IE7 and Firefox, but it's available in Safari as well.

Still waiting. This is a really cool feature especially if you forget to logout somewhere and then see the warning.
Google when can I get my remote logoff on?

@glitch1138: that's true. the hacker can also be smart and create a script to run in the background to keep the real user from ever logging in to change his/her password.

This sounds like a very nice feature.
@syko21: The chances of your account getting hacked are more than likely due to your own error.
It's hardly fair to say a new "security" type feature has come to late for you.
@*.*: There _really_ is no point in saying that you don't have it yet. Just be patient.

Does anybody know what these POP3 accesses from Google IPs are ? I mean I have two gmail accounts for different purposes, but none of them has either POP3 or IMAP enabled, nor do I forward anything automatically from one acc to the other...
These accesses are all from Google IPs in regular cycles.
