Dropbox Gadget Adds Your Synced Files to iGoogle
Posted by Adam Pash at 7:00 AM on July 8, 2008
Last week we introduced you to Dropbox, a freeware application that instantaneously syncs files between computers and backs them up online through the Dropbox web interface. The Dropbox iGoogle gadget provides quick access to any of your Dropbox files through the comfort and convenience of your iGoogle dashboard. Off the bat the Dropbox gadget is a little funky, but if you install the Fix Dropbox Width Greasemonkey script in addition to the iGoogle gadget, it fits perfectly among your other iGoogle gadgets.

I do web production between computers at work & home and could really use something like Dropbox.
Sadly, I missed the beta sign-up.
Is it working as promised for everyone? Should I keep tracking it or forget about it?
Also, is there a size limit to the syncing? (I would understand if there was one for backing up)

Wouldn't a USB flash drive with SyncbackSE (or the freeware Syncback) be faster and more private? Don't think for a moment that some Google robot isn't looking at your drop box.

The first five people that post their email address in this blog, to them I will send an invite :)
5 only.... and please don't ask if you really do not intend to use it. Watch the video at their site for a full understanding of how Dropbox works before you go and waste one of my invites :p

@nerdly,
Sync is OS limited. It has a url that is impossible to remember. It has moved into a paid status. It has a less pretty GUI.
Dropbox is running on nearly all OS's at this time. It has a url that is dead-easy to remember. It is still in beta. It has limited storage. It is not yet a paid service. It has a very nice web interface.
To me, the big advantages that Dropbox has over Syn(something'er'another) is:
(1) The name. WTF kind of a name is syncplicity & HTF are we suppose to remember that?
(2) Cross-OS-platform. I can go from my PC to my MAC to my Linux(flavor) without any problems at all, when using Dropbox. syncplicity is limited to Windows.
(3) I find the web interface of Dropbox to be more userfriendly... but this could just be me.
Hope this helps :)

@nerdly: I began toying around with both Dropbox and Syncplicity for the first time this evening. I'm still a novice at both programs, but from what I've seen so far, I'm leaning toward Syncplicity.
Contrary to what Yokhannan stated, Syncplicity is still in free beta. During the beta, it offers unlimited storage though they mention that free accounts will eventually be cut to 2GB.
Dropbox is a very cool program, but the fact that it only syncs a single folder or "dropbox" gives it limited functionality. Syncplicity allows you to choose exactly which folders you want to keep synced.
Another feature Syncplicity has that may seal the deal for me is the ability to simultaneously sync with my google docs account. This is the first working two-way sync between google docs and my desktop I've found. This is incredibly convenient! For example, if I want to add a purchase to my excel expense sheet from my friend's computer I can do so on google docs and it will instantly sync to my desktop. Very handy! The service also has the ability to automatically sync your photos with Facebook, though this is something I'll probably never use.

@Yokhannan:
Even though you can't sync across platforms, you can still access all of your files from any OS using the web interface.
Plus, you don't have to put files in a "My Dropbox" folder; you can just right-click and sync any folder you want to.
The points above are enough for me to choose Syncplicity over Dropbox.
And picking on the name of a service is childish. If it works better, who cares what it's called?

@SpriteMV: Thanks for the correction on the beta-release... I was off by what... two weeks??
Also, Syncwthitis has been in development a bit longer then Dropbox, thus the missing features (such as 'right-click, select any folder to sync, that you mentioned, that is being added, based on their forum discussions) that you mentioned. I totally agree that at this time sync has a weebit more features, but that is due only to development time, based on what I gather from reading both forums, and having used both apps.
And, I totally agree with the Google Apps integration being a totally cool feature! I SHOULD have included that in my post above... my bad.
@drdoombot: so, just because a "web interface" is multi-platform makes it better? LOL. I think not. The idea behind this sort of software is NOT "web interface".... so, I stand by my points that Dropbox being cross-OS already, is a point towards Dropbox and a point against Sync. Again, the idea behind this time of software is NOT the web interface, so saying Sync "is multi-OS compatible" just doesn't cut it... as, technically it's just a website and thus is OF COURSE OS-friendly.
As for the name being "childish".... if I have to google the damn name of it every time I want to visit my account there, because the name is some odd-ball of a screwed up name, how does this not affect the overall product marketablity? (which is what my initial comment is all about in the first place)

@nerdly "Any experiences with this compared to syncplicity.com? "
I used them both for the last several weeks, and have just uninstalled syncplicity.
Dropbox was for me far more useful for me, because:
1) I don't want to sync multiple folders all the time - i usually have one or two files that I will need access to, and I know which ones they are in advance.
2) Syncplicity is slow. Even ignoring the fact that if you accidentally include a media folder (as I did) and might wind up trying to sync 3 or 4GB, the synchronization speed is single digit kbps ... dropbox was averaging 40+kbps.
3) Dropbox has an easy to set up 'public' or shared folder that you can use to share a file with friends or coworkers.
4) Nothing to install, just go online login and get your files - don't have to sync every blessed file and folder that you selected, just download the one you need - even on a mobile phone.
Could this be done with a flash drive? yes, except for the sharing ... and except that I'm forgetful enough to forget even that ... and there'd be no mobile phone access - and it's far easier for me just to have a dropbox folder called 'working' that includes everything I'm working on at the moment and now I don't have to worry about it.

I use SMEStorage.com and they have had the Google Gadget feature for ages, as well as a Firefox plug-in and a really cool iPhone version. I'm currently beta testing their MS Office plug-in and also the alpha of them opening up their whole platform to any Amazon S3 user.
For me the feature list they provide is much more business oriented which suits my use. I love the way that I can share a file with my group of friends and they get a Twitter message and/or an email.
I don't think these guys have not formally launched yet but you get 250MB free on S3 and I've been using two accounts but will probably use my own S3 account and Copy the files over when they launch this piece.
I got an email from them this morning about testing a sync tool so I guess multi location sync is next on their roadmap.

One of the important facts to keep in mind is whether these companies use Amazon S3 or E2.
E2 is far superior to S3 and provides the company to do a ton more features and options with file manipulation (file renames without re-uploads, uploading only the changed parts of a file, etc).
It is sort of like how JungleDisk works with their free/verse pro version. If you are really serious about backing up huge amounts of data, you go with their pro version (which uses their E2 servers).
The same works with these other parties that are tapping into the Amazon Cloud... those companies who are getting their own E2 servers are going to be able to provide a much broader availabilities of services and features to their customers.

@bachcottage the thing about dropbox is that its more than just syncing. you can also eliminate the need to have to email revisions back and forth between yourself and a project partner by giving them one of dropbox's public links to a file... and it saves every revision for you.. so all of them are accessible if you ever need to go back
