PIM Backup Backs Up Windows Mobile Data
Posted by Lifehacker US Edition at 11:30 PM on July 7, 2008
Windows Mobile only: The free PIM Backup utility makes backup copies of your appointments, call logs, contacts, messages, speed dials, tasks, and even folders and file types you specify. PIM Backup jobs run manually or on a schedule you set. While travelling and far away from my home computer, PIM Backup saved me from a big headache when I had to hard reset my Windows Mobile phone: with all my personal data backed up on the removable mini SD card in the phone, the time from hard reset to restored data was less than 10 minutes. We've covered how to back up your Windows Mobile device's content to the web with DashWire, but PIM Backup comes in handy for file backup without using your handheld's data connection. PIM Backup is a free download for Windows Mobile 6/5/2003SE.

Freeware Bitpim is much more robust and has a lot more features, including moving Ringtones on and off phones that have their ringtones locked in (*cough* Verizon *cough*), and viewing the phones subdirectory directly.
It allows you to manage your ringtones, wallpapers, pictures, contacts, messages, pretty much anything in your phone.
Check it out.

Just be sure to backup what you want to backup with PIM backup. I have exchange sync'd with my TyTn II WM 6.1 and by default it tries to backup this information and doesn't select all my text message folders so make sure you check the options.
I would love to run this thing on a scheduled task to my micro SD card in case my device ever went awry and I hadn't done it recently.
Check out Sashimi's automated installer and the ROM's that have been made with User Customisation (by Sleuth) that will run programs from the micro SD card without having to reinstall them all again after a hard reset.

I used this before on my XV6700 (Apache) and it created duplicates for all my contacts. I had to hard reset my phone away from home to get my contacts and when I synced my phone at home dups of everything! Nothing worse then having to delete 400+ contacts cause they are dups.

@BigDASH: I had the exact same thing occur (with the exact same phone), but I found it was because of a setting I had set myself. It gives you the option to overwrite existing contacts or add them in (if you have it set to add, regardless of how obvious the duplicate is it just jams it right into the list.)

I'll keep that in mind... but I have since stayed away.

you can set activesync up to sync wirelessly even w/o exchange ... it's a download that goes on your desktop. Your pc has to be running at all times, but this might be a great use for an old desktop and that extra copy of outlook you get for home use if you use it at work.

This may seem a bit obtuse, but I have also used PIM Backup to set up a new PDA Phone. I did a backup on my older PPC and restored to the new one. All set - contacts, SMSs and all - before I even got it home.
(Yes, it's true. I just couldn't wait to get at my shiny new gadget.)

Its a great app. I just cracked the screen on my sprint mogul and before operating on it I back it up. Well see how I do once I try to restore it. Wish me luck :)

i have been looking for a tool like this for more than a year.
it exports contacts in a csv file inside a zip file.
exactly the sort of thing i would call a real backup.
a file you can store and read in any operating system.
just the thing you need in a real emergency.

This program is fantastic, I've been using it since the screen broke on my Qtek S110 just in case it finally decides to give up.
