Dropbox Syncs and Backs Up Files Between Computers Instantaneously
Posted by Adam Pash at 9:00 AM on July 3, 2008
Windows/Mac only: Freeware application and web service Dropbox instantaneously backs up and syncs your files over the internet and to any computer. After you install the application, it will create a Dropbox folder on your hard drive. Any file you put inside that folder will automatically be synced and monitored for changes, and each time a change is saved, it backs up and syncs the file again. Even better, Dropbox does revision history, so if you accidentally saved a file and wanted to revert to an old version or deleted a file, Dropbox can recover any previous version. See the video above for a full demonstration.
Any file that's synced with Dropbox is available on any computer you sync it to or through the Dropbox web interface. During the beta, Dropbox is limited to 2GB of storage space and syncing. The software and service will remain free of charge, but if you need more than the 2GB, premium accounts will be available. Dropbox is currently Windows and Mac only, though the Dropbox blog promises a Linux client soon.
The application is currently in closed beta, but we've got 500 invites for Lifehacker readers to try it out—just click through to the Dropbox Signup link below; the beta code is lifehacker. If the invites run out (and they probably will), all new users get 10 invites of their own they can dish out to friends, so if you get an invite, feel free to share the love with your fellow commenters. If you've been using Dropbox already, let's hear how it's been working for you in the comments.

Looks super slick. I love it.
Only thing missing is Windows Mobile support :)
But who knows what's gonna be added soon... this looks like it could become THE next killer app. It kind of reminds me of Dashwire but for the PC :)

This one is nice but Windows Live Skydrive has 5GB storage.
@nka:
While I agree, I still believe in the old fashion way of storing data through an actual flash drive because you know that it's there when you need it..offline or online.

I LOVE DropBox. Literally it has become my new favorite application. It syncs quick as hell and I have had no real problems with it that I didn't cause myself.
I have xampp installed, and can work on web dev stuff from any computer I encounter..and it's all backed up as soon as I close the file. Simply awesome.

Dropbox is, in my opinion, the best thing EVER. Wow. It is perfectly seamless for me. I do absolutely nothing. I just enjoy the peace of my mind that my stuff is backed up. I will for sure be buying extra space when it becomes available.
I've shared folders with friends, and the only problem was the one didn't know how to click that teensy-tiny arrow beside to download it.

I am using Truecrypt to create an encrypted container inside of Dropbox, so I can have a protected folder that's sync'd automatically.(After mounting the container)
You don't have an option for a password protected folder from them.
Works perfectly for me...

I've been using it for a few months now. The revision system works great. The only downside is you can't add other folders for Dropbox to monitor. It will only sync the MyDropbox folder and any folders that you nest under it.

So close to being what I need. I've been using Live Mesh, which is pretty mucht the same thing except there's no mac client yet, but it does let you share any folder instead of just one. Ah well, I'll have a play around, but when this gets the ability to share any folder or when the Live Mesh mac client is available, that'll be the one I use.

Dropbox seems like a very viable product. However, I've been trying out Syncplicity for a few weeks and found it much more useful for my needs. I had previously used Foldershare for 2+ years, which I loved to hate due to many problems. What I appreciate with Syncplicity is its ability to synchronize specific folders, like Foldershare but with cloud capabilities. I also find their support staff/developers very quick and responsive.

I personally haven't tried DropBox, but it sounds like an awesome app. will give it a whirl. For those looking for unlimited peer to peer sharing, in the same manner as DropBox (minus the revision control), try FolderShare.com, it's been working really great! for a beginner it's slightly weird to setup, but once it's setup, it's a breeze, especially for sharing data with friends (translated: instead of transferring files via extremely slow IM File Transfer Protocol).

I have found that Live Mesh works better for me. Live Mesh has remote desktop built in, I don't need to have Vista Business or XP Pro to use remote desktop anymore. Also, It has a web interface that looks like the desktop on a computer, so you can choose to only sync files to the Live Desktop instead of another computer also. This works better at school because I don't have to install anything to get to my files, I can use the web interface...I don't know if I can do all that with Drop Box...

@subodhgupta:
Yep, it changes often but most of my files are excel and pdf files that I use at different places. I usually don't share these files with anyone, but they're always updated whenever I move to another place.
My container is only one gig, so I still have room for other photos/docs that I share with family.
But then this is a temporary fix, until they actually implement protected folders.

Been using www.dropboks.com (not "box") for about a year, and it works pretty well. I don't think it syncs, but it's got a gig of free storage, and pretty much all you have to do is load files. Each file also has a direct link if you want someone else to see it.
I guess the version you're talking about is a little better, but I don't really need the syncing service right now.
(I often use dropboks as a way to send myself a file at work, or from work to home -- my email is pretty much open to everyone in the office, but my browsing is private, so this works.)

Is there a program like this that works over a home network. I have had the hardest time getting my XP, Vista, and OSX machines to link up and share files. Plus, I move more than 5ish gigs. I am more in the 2 or 3 terabyte realm.
In any event, I want a program that works as easily to sync my machines.
Any suggestions?

@qrius:
Dropbox is using IE's proxy configuration and I've had luck getting through the proxy at our office by manually entering the proxy definition in IE instead of allowing IE to automatically detect the proxy settings. Of course, that means when I take my laptop home I have to manually shut off the proxy settings, but I'm working on a couple of registry files and command script to do that automatically based on my IP.
Word has it that they're going to update the dropbox software to not rely on IE's settings. I think that's going to be a big improvement.
Using Truecrypt volumes are the best way to use an app like this - I'm a bit leery of dropping un-encrypted files on a beta platform. Actually I'm a bit leery of dropping un-encrypted files even on a production platform! ;-]

I know it means using two separate programs but I've been on FolderShare for years for sync purposes and just started using Mozy for backup. I guess DropBox and SugarSync combine both functions, but FS is free and Mozy (for now) is unlimited storage for $5 a month. Plus I don't like having to rearrange my file system to suit DropBox.
PS Guardianfx - you should certainly try FS for syncing across your home network.

A simple RAID and shareware backup will do this in a secure fashion for almost everyone. Apple notebook users can do it with external drives and about 3 clicks (I expect Windows notebooks can do it, but don't know how complicated). That'll give you a FULL backup - not just 2GB, and you can use your own remote desktop and encrypt the bejeezus out of it.
Anyone who uses a 3d party internet apps or servers (including .mac - oops, "mobileME!!") and expects any sort of real security is a fool or a sucker. Or both.

I was dying for a Dropbox invite a few months back and loved it once I got in. Around the same time, I started using Syncplicity. Guess which one I use now? Syncplicity
Syncplicity does everything Dropbox does:
-Syncs folders between computers
-Provides a web interface to download your files
-Keeps revisions of your files
-Uses a client to keep things simple and easy
-Every file gets a URL for sharing
How is Syncplicity better than Dropbox?
1. You don't have use a specific folder (i.e. "My Dropbox") to share/sync stuff; just take any of your existing folders and sync it
2. While the beta is on, you get unlimited storage (I'm using around 53gb right now). After the beta, you get 4gb (2gb more than Dropbox)
As cool as Dropbox seemed to me when I didn't have it, I realized it wasn't so great once I started using Syncplicity.

I've been using dropbox for a while (I remember getting the invite through a lifehacker piece a while back, by the way) and it's been great. Simple and effective. And if like me you only need it for documents, 2gb is enough. Plus the members of the forum are helpful

Anyone notice that ADrive (www.adrive.com) is out of beta now? 50GB and they have a back-up client for free users (haven't tried it, so no idea how it compares to DropBox who FINALLY sent me an invite after I applied months ago) Also, $6.95 per month gets WebDAV access to that 50GB.

I've been using DropBox for a few months now. I also use a TrueCrypt container (3 actually) for my more important files. I installed Firefox 3 Portable in My Dropbox, so now everything is synced between all my machines (I moved my cache to save bandwidth).
Some minor annoyances and problems, but my overall feelings are positive.

It seems like Microsoft Groove does a lot of what this application does. You can sync any number of folders you want and can control which sub-folders are included. I've used it for a good amount of time to sync my laptop and desktop and have found it to be nice and fast with most documents synchronizing within 10 seconds of saving.
