Google Media Server Streams Your Files Easily Between Screens
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 9:30 PM on June 27, 2008
Windows only: Send videos, pictures and music between Windows PCs or any Universal Plug n' Play device (like a Playstation 3) with a simple Google Desktop Gadget called Google Media Server. The gadget allows you to offer up all the media indexed by Google Desktop to any other device with the gadget, or that can grab UPnP media, and also offers access to your Picasa Web Albums and YouTube videos. For anyone looking for an easy way to shuttle their digital media back and forth across a standard home network, this gadget might be the "just works" kick-starter. Google Media Server is a free download, requires a Windows system running Google Desktop 5 or later.

@Jabronimus: "Why winblows?"
Oh, I get it! You replaced the second syllable of Windows with the word "blows" because they sound alike and because "blows" it implies poor quality (and oral sex). Did you get that joke from running the new version of iHumor?
"What's wrong with mac?"
That's like seeing someone driving a car and asking what's wrong with Power Wheels.

@Jerry G.: You can already do it with XBMC. Just have a share created on your PC, and let XBMC map to it. Voila, streaming media.

So, does this mean you can stream youtube videos to your xbox 360? If so... awesome!

@JrezIN: I agree with you. I used Google Desktop for a while but got rid of it because it was a resource hog. I'd really like to try this as a standalone app.

You mean there is a new version of iHumour? Is it configured to run iYO-Momma? What about iManwalksintoabar module?

The sad part is... It requires Google Desktop... Don't get me wrong, I like it... it's just that by using it for some time, it became a bit of resource hog and also requires some disk space (I mean, too much for what it does) and perform TOO much reads and writes in my disk almost all the time...
I would prefer a standalone media server like TVersity, ORB, logitech's one and so one... but this may be probably good enough for who likes GD...

@firesign: Good call. I just tried to set it up and it pales in comparison to TVersity. My Xbox 360 lusts for media! I give it.. TVersity!

Hey, who here is sick of every story's comments turning into a Mac vs PC flame war. Come on poeple.. They did it for windows because they just are starting with one platform at a time.. How many software companies do you know of that simultaneously develops for all platforms. Not many.. so what do you do.. you go for the easiest one with the most penetration in the market.. simple as that.. especially for beta.
Wait, I just figured out.. Since we gave you normal people the internet.. we just figured you all worked computer jobs like us! I have finally figured it out. The people that persist this mac/pc war.. are basically the 10 year olds on the bbs that need to grow up a little bit. because no one cares..
Talk about the media center. Why is google doing this? That's my question? and does this mean there is soon to be an Android for the Set-top box? Are we going to see a push for the user controlling their set-top box os and not being held hostage to the service provider? Hmmmm..

@johnsin: You've got a point, but most people know this and don't want to give trolls validation by taking the time to type it.
As for google's agenda here, I think a lot of these projects are born out of their 80/20 workload. That is, employees work 80% on google stuff and 20% on personal stuff (or so they say). This is how projects like macfuse (NTFS support in OSX) are born. This stuff doesn't bring any money in, but they get to dip their toes into fresh technology.

@JrezIN: I just noticed that recently, it really EATS UP disk space, huh. Actually I ended-up uninstalling it from my laptop because of the hard drive space.

I was hoping that this would work with my medialounge, but i think that it might not be a full unp device. Anyone else have any luck with such a set up? Perhaps a portforward issue? Hmmmmmm...tinker tinker tinker!!
