Web Forum Reader Offers Feed-Reader-Like Browsing
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 10:12 PM on June 26, 2008
Windows only: Browse web forum threads and posts like RSS feeds with Web Forum Reader, a free Windows application. Adding forums you frequent to the app is done through an easy-to-grok wizard, and the program parses through the topics you haven't looked at with better speed than you'd find on often ad-loaded forum pages. You can also have the program track and alert you to changes in certain threads, and load your forums into tabs for quicker navigation. Web Forum Reader is a free download for Windows systems only.

Nice program but sorry, it seems that it is not free...

would this work with Proboards, or is it only for phpBB derivatives?

Launch error crash.
Launch, enter login info, crash (password protected forum).
Launch, setup forum, retrieve info, crash.
Thumbs down.

I just tried it out and man, is it buggy. The first launch after installation hung. The second launch gave me an error, launched, and the menu bar was messed up but the program worked. But after I'd finished setting up one forum, and it correctly grabbed all the information, I merely clicked on one topic, the program flashed an error message briefly, and the whole thing crashed and closed out.
Sorry, it's a great idea, but it doesn't work.

i too have been thoroughly disappointed by web forum reader's stability... i found it basically unusable, which is a shame because it's the only one of it's kind that i've been able to find and REALLY want a way to read multiple web forums the way i read multiple newsgroups - that being 'all in one place'...

To confirm what alex_herrero said, the license.txt states that it's not freeware.
It crashed for me, too.

This is such a great idea for people like me that follow several forums.
Sadly, the comments above keep me from trying it.

In defence of these guys, I too installed it and it borked when I tried to run it. Therefore I instantly uninstalleded it, but filled in their little "Why are you uninstalling this?" form. Within a few minutes I got an email back from Konstantin at Chemtable with a different version to install which created a log file. I sent the log file back and , after a couple of iterations, I managed to get a proper working copy.
Sadly I hadn't realised it was not freeware, so I shall still be removing it (as I'm basically a cheapskate) but it was nice to see them responding so quickly and positively.

It says I have 40 days left to register before it expires, and I haven't been able to let it monitor the one forum I'm member of because it's password protected. The idea is nice, but the implementation is weak (leaving superlatives out).
Anyway, I don't think this is the way to go. I'd be more pleased of forums offer a way to subscribe to certain topics and generate a personalised RSS feed.

Downloaded the lite version. Installed, but cant get it to open, ends up not responding. After killing then trying to open again, it just stays minimized in the task bar without responding. no luck.

This appears to dislike Vista.

I, too, am deterred by the comments above.
And the site's banner logo is oddly reminiscent of Stepcase Lifehack.

This program is buggy as all get out. Why I saw this recommended on two different sites today is beyond me.

Kevin, is there any way you can edit the blog's post to state that it is not freeware?
Thanks!
