Get 101 Photoshop Tips in Five Minutes
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 10:00 PM on June 25, 2008
Photoshop enthusiast and frantic video editor Deke McClelland fits 101 tips for Adobe's premiere product into five minutes of video, and the results are surprisingly watchable. Granted, a lot of the tips are simply shortcuts you may or may not have discovered, but McClelland fits a good bit of real advice—such as which tools to just stay away from entirely—into his frantic run. Worth a listen to catch shortcuts you might not have known, and real advice from a serious Photoshop enthusiast.

Deke is awesome. Didn't learn too much from this, but loved it anyway!

someone needs to cut down on their sugar intake.
That all "i'm a hip 45 year old" ruined it for me. I'd rather google for hours than put up with that.

I'm a photoshop noob, and the best tip I got from that?
I didn't, too much info in a short time, but it did tell me that everything except ctrl+shift+a does something. Neat.

Man, deke is one crazy fu... person.
I think I maybe caught 3-5 shortcuts I didn't know... not because I knew all 108, but because they went by so fast! Still, it's a new definition of edutainment.
...sorry if this is a dupe. Comment system not liking me today.

"I don't even know what ctrl-shift-A does!"
Love it. Was a little put-off by the old guy rapping vibe though.

@cae, He is down with the kids, the top of his field, he doesn't never fail, blah blah blah.
Yeah, the rather perplexing rappy bits were odd. Just gimme photoshop, rap in your own time.

More helpful than this terrible rock video to the tune of "Popular" by Nada Surf would have been a transcript of everything he said so I can just read it and not deal with the terrible acting/singing.

I'll give it to him--I thought it was really cool.
It's seems more of a marketing piece for his re-launch than anything.
It looks great.
The guy is having fun, not trying to be hip.
And I assure you that it's wrong to attack him for rapping--he ain't rapping.
I *do* blame him for singing, though.

Deke singing? No, no, no, no, no. Don't EVER do that again, Deke.
Shortcuts remembered? ...zero

it was all tolerable until he started to sing. This reminds me too much of Scoble's Kindle review...too much attitude, thin on content.

So knowing a shortcut is a tip? Here's a tip, how about not ripping off a Nada Surf tune so you can try to fit in with the younguns.
Here's something...
...lay off the filters.
You could also try looking at these vids, they actually explain things:

AWESOME!!! Been using PhotoShop professionally since version 2 10 years ago and I didn't know half of those shortcuts because I didn't need to. I can make good use out of a half-dozen or so of those on a daily basis (saving only a few seconds).

Watch out: calling Photoshop "Adobe's premiere product" is an awful turn of phrase. It's a bit confusing, as people might assume you're talking about "Adobe's Premiere product," which is a totally different animal.

I've long enjoyed Deke's writings leading back to the yonder days of early-90s Macworld, and I thought this video was very entertaining, although the presentation made it difficult to educate.
Like Steve Ballmer, a lot of people wish they could bust out and be free...

You know, the amazing and unlikely thing about this is, I think you're all right. Except that guy with the ""i'm a hip 45 year old" comment. I'm not the least bit hip. Which was your point. But see, I'm actually 46. (Ouch, that has got to hurt.)
No Dan Gookin, *you* rock. Thanks for inventing something that millions of people benefitted from. That's rare.
Everyone else, thanks!

Despite the odd chorus, I must say it's the most engaging presentation of 100+ hotkeys I've ever seen. Not to mention it only took a fraction of the time.
My biggest gripe is that he marketed it as "tips" instead of hotkeys. Either way, I appreciate his creativity.

What's the point of this? I mean, it's mildly cool and somewhat amusing but lacks any real value. He might as well fast forward it at x8 speed and get it under one minute, same usefulness to the viewer.
