Dexrex Stores Any IM Conversation Online
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 10:00 PM on June 23, 2008
Windows only: Dexrex, a free set of plug-ins for most popular IM clients, lets you store transcripts of your IM conversations from any system online for later reference. Dexrex's plug-ins work with Digsby, Pidgin, AIM Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, and many more—see the video below for a demonstration. You can even import older, locally-saved chat logs onto the site for a complete archive, or sign into chat directly through Dexrex's site, while automatically saving transcripts. Whether or not you trust your chat logs to an online storage site is up to you, of course, but it's definitely helpful if you trade a lot of links and important info through chat. Dexrex's extensions are free downloads for Windows chat clients only. Hit the jump for a video showing off some of Dexrex's features:

Cool. I can get out those AOL messages from 1995. Wish there were some offline version of this though.

So, I just have to share my username and password with dexrex's non-secure site? Yeah, right.... For Google Talk, that means letting it have access to all my email.

This is one of the main reasons I have stuck with meebo over pidgin & digsby.
I like to be able to see my history from any computer.

This is pretty neat but I'd really like would be something like Dexrex that you could run off your own server, that way you don't have to depend on someone else.

No digsby support, and obviously no Adium support.

Umm, Meebo.com has been doing the whole storing chat history on their servers for years already, except it doesnt come as a plugin to other chat proggies, but still been using it for years and i find it extremely useful.

"We couldn't import your conversations. Feel free to contact us, and we'll look into the problem right away."
Probably just too much data. But I use Pidgin(Portable) and have my logs always with me.

Hell, no. I don't want my logs on the internet even if they paid me. THEIR MINE I TELL YOU!

@ahawks: We do offer Digsby support on the PC, but we're still working on Mac support. A version of Dexrex Extensions that works on Adium, iChat, and all major Mac IM platforms (e.g., Yahoo messenger) is in the works. We'll make an announcement at [blog.dexrex.com] as soon as it's finished.
If there are any other clients (Mac or PC) that you would like us to support, please let us know at [www.dexrex.com]

@nmabry: I'm the Evangelist for Dexrex, and I just wanted to help clear this point up. We strongly emphasize security and privacy in everything we do -- for instance, we use 128-bit SSL encryption everywhere on our site, including when you login.
We use stored passwords with "linked" screen names -- that is, when you have more than one screen name attached to an account. That way we can be sure that you are still authorized to look at that screen name's history. If the password doesn't pass our periodic check, then you have to re-authorize that screen name when you next log in.
Dexrex does not download any information from your account, not even the buddy list that's stored on the server. We recognize that trust is vital to our business, so we make every effort to protect your security and privacy.
