Sidenote Is a Universal, Unobtrusive Note Drawer
Posted by Adam Pash at 6:00 AM on June 21, 2008
Mac OS X only: Donationware application Sidenote adds an unobtrusive sidebar to your Mac desktop for taking and organising multiple rich text notes. Under normal circumstances, Sidenote takes up a couple of pixels on the edge of your screen (though you can make it completely invisible in the Preferences), so it doesn't take any space until you need it. You can invoke Sidenote by either hovering your mouse over that edge or with the user-definable keyboard shortcut. In fact, virtually every aspect of the program is accessible via a keyboard shortcut, which any keyboard lover can appreciate. The application manages multiple notes, prints, emails, and exports notes, and is almost entirely customisable. Sidenote is donationware, Mac OS X only.

I'm a huge fan of Evernote which does the same thing and more. Whats great is that it works on Mac, Windze, AND Linux (via Firefox). When you add notes, web clips, or email to Evernote, you sync them to the Evernote website, which you can then access (or update) from any computer with a browser. You can even view and manage your notes from your iPhone with their great interface. Evernote is still in beta, but you can apply easily on their website.

@jpx72x: LOL I thought the same thing. After thinking more (it's Friday afternoon - why do I need to think more...) I believe the universal to be for this: "The application manages multiple notes, prints, emails, and exports notes, and is almost entirely customizable."

@Al Iguana: I'm sure that's what it means, but I figured I'd point it out as a little joke.

@jpx72x: I think Universal means PPC/Intel, not cross-platform.

I've been using sidenote for a while now and I love it. It is far better than the stickies come with OSX.
What I find especially useful is the ability to drag and drop pdfs right into it-- this is great for pdf info I need to access quickly.

I think Evernote can be a bit of hog and take up too much real estate. I like this little app. It works great for my needs when I want to jot a quick electronic note instead of scribbling in my moleskine.

I wanted to like Evernote but the whole website syncing thing is ridiculous. Can't wait to try sidenote!

if you have your dock on the left side, this tool is worthless. there is no way to move it to a different side of the screen and it can't activate behind the dock. it doesn't show as an application, so i had to kill the process. too bad, i was intrigued.

The site says "10.3.8 or later" and then on the SAME SCREEN, it has "10.4 or later".

Is this about the same thing as QuickSilver's Shelf? Which was featured before on LH and how I started using it... Hehe

How does this compare with Zotero? Any reason to think it would be an improvement over Zotero's note-taking ability?

@LavernaRegulus:
Are you running the most current version? There is a button that, once pushed, will move Sidenote to the right side of the screen.

Btw, for Windows users, I've recently discovered an important equation:
OneNote + Live Mesh = All notes always available

Tried this out. Love working with it from the desktop screen--very simple to use and quick. For using it when I'm on the Internet, I noticed the drawer does not open when I move the cursor to the edge of the screen--it's behind the web page. It worked when I assigned a hotkey so I could open the drawer on top of the page displayed in the browser. Very nice for taking notes when looking at web pages.

@LavernaRegulus: All you have to do is click the second button from the right on the application, and Sidenote will be moved to the right side of your screen.

@LavernaRegulus: Click the button to the left of the thumb tack button. This switches Sidenote's window from one side to the other. I think I used Sidenote for a month before I bothered figuring out what that button was for.

Great little application for keeping quick notes that are accessed or referred to semi-regularly, but not used often enough to commit to memory. Has saved me so much time since I installed it.
It'd be nice if the Sidenote window stayed active for a touch longer if the cursor moves off of the window. My reflex action is to move the cursor off the window and start typing as soon as the window slides out. But as soon as the cursor slips off, so goes Sidenote. Otherwise no complaints. It's really handy.

It would be nice if there was an easy way to integrate Sidenote with an application like Evernote like a one click way of exporting to Evernote or a script that automatically uploads each new or modified note to Evernote. Anyone know of a way to do that?

i thought this was the best note-taking application. until i think it went stagnant.
so when i press expose, i want the windows im currently working with to be exposed. if i have sidenote set to automatically hide, i dont want that crap popping up in my expose. i find that the mysterious sidenote-hider-holder thing (its not the actual note - that would actually be less-annoying) popping up in my expose when it should be hiding particularly annoying.
i went back to Stickies after a few days. when it comes down to it, it pretty much does everything Sidenote can do and works better. also i recently found out theres a shortcut (Command+Shift+Y) to make a Sticky note from any Mac app. i can highlight something in Mail, do the shortcut combo, and in a few seconds, there's my note.
also, there was a prior post about "Sidenote can magically do PDF's". Whoopie! so can Stickies and any other half-assed rich text app.
Sidenote pretty much was a total distraction. and the whole point of me looking at an app like that was to be less distracted.

I also highly recommend a clever little app called SketchBox. Flexible, configurable, simply useful feature set, friendly support and - a personal sensitivity - double-clicking on a title bar will collapse the window in place avoiding excessive minimizing, traveling to/from dock or shuffling of windows.
Cheers
