What Do You Want to Hear from Apple Tomorrow?
Posted by Gina Trapani at 3:21 PM on June 9, 2008

Tomorrow morning at 10AM US Pacific time, some guy named Steve Something from some company called Orange—no, Apple—will make some kind of announcement probably involving some phone, and maybe some computer operating system. We're not going to be there when all this happens, but we will be picking out the good parts reported by all the poor schlubs competing for not-blurry pictures and Wi-Fi connectivity who are. Rumours abound for what Apple news the Stevenote might reveal tomorrow—what are you hoping to hear? Tell us in the comments.

I would love to see them announce an update for the iPod Touch and iPhone which would allow users to download software to them. I.e. finally open up the device to consumers.

I'd love to have news of an iMac Mini update - I've been dreaming of making one my home media centerpiece (after reading certain comments in Lifehacker) and I've heard the rumors some months ago about a refresh... nothing so far, but I remain hopeful!

Definitely hoping for release of the AppStore for iPhone / iPod touch. Having a jailbroken touch is nice and all, but I've got a feeling some of the better apps from bigger corps are gonna be on the AppStore.

Listed in increasing order of absurdity:
iphone apps live tomorrow.
new .mac that rocks instead of sucks (and doesn't have a hellka stupid name like MobileMe)
10.6 that makes leopard as solid as tiger and 7x as fast. And has quicksilver built in.
A program by apple that runs any windows code under os x without virtualization (like Wine but 1000x better) but keeps it seperate from the os so we don't suffer for microsoft's incompetence.

I want to hear someday that Apple took all the Windows code, rewrote it from scratch in a Unix based way, the very same way they rewrote the Apple code for OS X, so that now Windows will actually work like it should. And it will be released under an open source / GPL license.
Okay, one can dream, eh?

I also would like to see a mid-range tower, but I know this is unlikely. Apple doesn't want to provide something between the Pro and Mini/iMac ranges because they figure it'll undermine sales of the higher end models. Currently, you're forced to go Pro if you don't want a really craptacular video card and any upgrade potential if you want a Mac. This is why I alternate new computer purchases as Mac and PC. The PC can be upgraded and used for gaming. The Mac is frozen in time. I use the Mac until it is so hopelessly outdated that it can't run current software.

I'd like to see:
1) a vanilla OSX install for all x86 systems. I'd go to the store and buy three copies tommorow. Bye Windows. I don't want Applecare or helplines, I just want to be legal.
2) an AppleTV with like a 1 TB drive inside (or at least a user-upgradable drive). Won't happen though, at least not within a budget that mere humans can afford.
3) A new firmware update for my 6G Classic, that fixes the tinny sound.
It'll be: iPhone3G, UK movies in the iTS, same old.

On the iPhone front:
A new iPhone (black/red back) with a camera on the front for iChat calls that go through either wifi or 3G. Actually a bit slimmer (sort of beveled on top and bottom). With increased battery life. Only one model, 16gb, but very low price.
Then Apple announces iChat for Windows so everyone can be one happy iChat family, video-calling each other from their iPhones and computers.

A Mac Mini update, definitely. Sweet little machine, but getting outdated in comparison to the rest of the Mac "consumer" line.
Penryn processor, bump up the hard drive space on both models, and update the graphics (Intel GMA X3100 ?). And I wouldn't cry if all models had the Superdrive (really now, CDRW + DVD reader is pretty lame).

1) An OS X that can be installed on a PC the same way Windows and Linux can.
and
2) either a "practical" sized hard drive (we are dealing with video content here...hopefully HiDef pretty soon) or the USB port turned on on the AppleTV (without the hacks).
The only thing keeping me from buying the Apple TV is lack of indigenous storage. I don't want to have to depend on a network - wired or not - for video playback.
Yeah, I'm lazy. But I have better things to do with my limited free time than troubleshoot network issues......
