VolumeTouch Controls Volume with Your Mouse, Keyboard
Posted by Adam Pash at 9:00 AM on June 7, 2008
Windows only: Freeware application VolumeTouch controls your system volume through your mouse's scroll wheel and customizable keyboard shortcuts. VolumeTouch may appear very similar to previously mentioned Volumouse, and it is, but a few features set it apart in the pros column. Most notably, VolumeTouch adds a great live-preview volume meter that displays your volume level in meter or percentage form as you change it. On the flip side, it's not quite as robust on features as Volumouse, so if you use Volumouse for more than basic system volume control, it may not be for you. Whichever you prefer, both apps are great for adding more control and quicker access to your system volume. VolumeTouch is freeware, Windows only.

What I'd like to know is whether it can handle master volume AND wav volumes, like Volumouse... One does need to control only wav or only master at times....

I recently got volumouse... I don't see an easy way to mute/unmute. I thought it was obvious that by pressing down on the mouse wheel, that would be done.
I'll have to try this. Mute is my main concern... I find myself quickly muting everything all the time- when I hit annoying web pages with audio (espn.com, I'm looking at you!), etc.

3RVX from [matt.malensek.net]
requires .NET 3.5 (thus, Windows only), skinnable via use of png images, customizable hot-keys for volume +/-, drive ejection, customizable sound mixer selection.

@amrich: i didn't see that option and uninstalled it, volmouse seems cool.
I use optical out to my speakers to master volume is worthless, wave is all that matters.

... and this differs from controlling the volume through windows and turning it up when you want it louder or quieter how?

Interesting note: You can adjust your sound volume in Ubuntu as well by moving the mouse over the sound icon and scrolling, if anyone was wondering.

yes, that has been the default behavior for quite some time, plus it also shows the present volume level in 3 steps. Scroll works universally in gnome for a lot more stuff (like scrolling between tabs, windows etc) then in windows.

You can do similar things with Pitaschio. It has other fun things too. It was even on Lifehacker.

@downstairs: Why do you need mute? Just use your mouse wheel to decreased the volume. I've got Volumouse set to change the volume when the pointer is over the taskbar with the increments set to 2500. Increase and decrease the volume in a jiff. I use Volumouse on just about every pc I use.

I use Sound Volume Hotkeys for this. It's a simple program but it always works and doesn't bloat up my slow computer. (However, I have been having issues getting it to run at starter, but I guess this is just my computer).

Allowing Volumouse on start up gave me this:
W32/Rbot-AHJ Worm!
Buh-bye!

I didn't get a virus with Volumouse, and VolumeTouch couldn't get me control with just one hand (on the mouse). I do wish Volumouse had that system tray icon though.

Didn't work for me. Did a lot of nothing. Tried a few key combinations as well as the mouse. Time to uninstall.

@downstairs: I think I understand you correctly - you're trying to figure out how to mute/unmute quickly with Volumouse, right?
The way I've got it set up is: first option - middle mouse button down / second option - speakers / third option - mute/unmute.
Press down your middle mouse button (or whatever you've got set as the first option) and rotate the scrollwheel downwards and upwards to mute and unmute.

It may or may not be important to note that this is gnome volume applet's default behavior.

I haven't tried this, but how is this any different than what windows already does? (click volume icon use scroll wheel)
