PikoWiki Optimizes Wiki-Editing for Phones
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 12:10 AM on June 7, 2008
If your net-connected phone or PDA lacks an easy-to-sync note-taking application, or you just prefer the open-ended nature of wikis, PikoWiki is one of the better mobile-friendly wikis out there. A super-slim interface gives you all the tools you'll need to make and edit notes and lists, and search or browse your pages. Those with basic HTML knowledge don't have to learn a single bit of wiki style, and anyone can try it out on the demo pages provided. The real benefit, of course, is getting at those same notes from any other browser you find yourself at. PikoWiki is free to sign up for and use.

I really wish I could find some Wiki software with a straightforward WYSIWYG editting interface to set up for myself and some of my colleagues at Univesity- I hae tried and liked Wetpaint but I want to be able to embed it into the existing system we use.... why do so few wikis have easy table formatting?

@northerngeek: For really simple take a look at jottit.com or the 2.0 version of pbwiki.com

@northerngeek: Here are the best two resources for comparing wiki software: [www.wikimatrix.org] [en.wikipedia.org]
I can save you some trouble by suggesting MoinMoin, which runs the wikis of Fedora, several Ubuntu flavors, and The GIMP [moinmo.in]
MoinMoin has an online sadbox, but the table insertion seems to be disabled. Click on "Edit (gui)". [moinmo.in]

I wish someone would put out something like this that lives right on my iPhone. Not web-based but completely local to the phone so I don't have to depend on the availability of internet access & the security of a website for all my content.

iTW is a iPhone based (not resident) wiki that follows the TiddlyWiki format. [iTW.BidiX.info]
I used to have the same opinion as dittrich in the desire to a have a locally residing wiki, but having used the iTW version I have found it very convenient to be able to access it from any computer. I make changes at work on the desktop and access later at home on the iPhone.

Today I added a feature that allows users to easily download a backup of all their PicoWiki pages with a click of a button. That might address some of the fear of having all your notes on someone else's server.
I host PicoWiki because, although I really like iTW, it's complicated and only works nicely on an iPhone. I also have a Blackberry and so I like a wiki that dispenses with the device-specific eye candy in favor of universal operability.
I'm working now on a password reminder and a setting manager. Hope to get those features tested and live tomorrow.

I just added password reminders. A few users have asked to change their passwords or to make their public wiki private and vice versa. I'll work on that tomorrow.

@northerngeek: I added a simple JS editor to help out anyone who doesn't like learning or typing markdown syntax. Thanks for the idea.

A user asked for the ability to delete pages this morning and I added the feature. Please let me know what else you think PicoWiki needs.

Check out BladeWiki, it runs on WindowsMobile phones. Wiki pages are stored as plain txt files and can be synced to the desktop.
