Gmail Gets 13 Experimental New Features Tonight
Posted by Gina Trapani at 10:01 AM on June 6, 2008

Starting at 6PM Pacific Time tonight, Google will start rolling out Gmail Labs, an experimental area of new Gmail features that will be familiar and very welcome to users of the Better Gmail Firefox extension. Once your Gmail account is Labs-enabled, you'll get a Labs tab in the Settings area of your account where you can enable 13 new experimental Gmail features, including signature tweaks, mouse gestures, keyboard shortcuts, and even a game. After the jump, get an exclusive sneak preview at the new Gmail Labs experimental features, with screenshots.
First, let's get right to the good stuff. Take a gander at the 13 new experimental features Gmail Labs adds:

Better Gmail and Better Gmail 2 users will be familiar (and hopefully very happy) with Fixed Font, Signature Tweaks, Custom Keyboard Shortcuts, and Hide Unread Counts. Google says it will start its user rollout in about an hour or so, which will continue over a span of the next few days or weeks. I've just gotten my account enabled here at the Google campus, so as I play with each feature, I'll add more screenshots to this post.
The Gmail team announced the new Gmail Labs at a press event at the Googleplex today which myself and several other tech bloggers and reporters attended. After the announcement, Keith Coleman (the Gmail product manager who we interviewed a few months back), took us on a tour of the Gmail "pod" or workspace. The best part? On a whiteboard where developers got to brainstorm feature ideas, they had taped a printout of Lifehacker readers' Gmail features wishlist. Not kidding. When I get home tonight, I will post photographic evidence.
You can read more about the press event with the Gmail team at the Googleplex today over at Techcrunch.
Update: Google's put up the Gmail Labs Help page, which links to the Gmail Labs Google Group.

Custom Date Formats and Muzzle are listed twice in the above images. Since it will cease to apply if you fix it, it's ok to strike this comment, too. :) Otherwise...to leave with some benefit, thanks for the writeup. I got here from "Manaually enable GMail Labs...":

Thanks for pointing that out. I was wrong, thanks God! :-)

@gpzbc: OK, how Superstars are great? What will you do with it? I think the Signature stuff will just add the signature before the quotation, and not after, the way it's being added today. Am I right? That's kinda useful, but still, misses the Wow factor Google always brings. I'd rather see a signature picker and EMBEDDED IMAGES for crying out loud! :)
Don't get me wrong: I am a hack of a fan of GMail and Google stuff - I use GMail for *everything*. But - and there's always a but - I think they had so much fuzz over nothing really innovative.
GMail itself was innovative, and so have been the latest additions, like POP / IMAP / Colored Labels and such. But I don't seem to find same pattern of cleverness and innovation on those new additions... That's all...

@Felipe Coury: I think these features were created by Google engineers that were interested in doing their own things, which is to say that they aren't representative of features that the Gmail team envisions that users are calling for. This first batch of features are basically a proof of concept of this new open Gmail development concept.

@Felipe Coury: I have never been a fan of labels. So I guess that Superstars has the same functionality. I haven't tried it yet, but I think I will use it more.
I use a similar system of tags in OneNote 2007. All of my research and personal information is managed in a fashion similar to Superstars.
One of my biggest beefs with gmail is the signature at the bottom and so I am excited about the Signature Float via Signature Tweak.

@adria.richards: I don't use Greasemonkey and even I think these are not exactly lame, but useless. Why do we need 13 different ways to get to the same place? We don't.

To all of you obviously too lazy to read the entire article, let me outline a few key points:
"Starting at 6PM Pacific Time tonight, Google will start rolling out Gmail Labs..."
"Google says it will start its user rollout in about an hour or so, which will continue over a span of the next few days or weeks."
THAT, my friends, is why you don't see it in your account yet, and why you don't know when you will get it. This is how Gmail rolls out all of it's new features, so this shouldn't be new to anyone. They almost NEVER release a new feature to everyone at once.

@Duane: Just realized that "random signature" requires that you provide it with an RSS feed to draw upon. Wasn't expecting that (although not sure what I thought the interface would be). So much for that idea until I can cobble up a static RSS file of the quotes I want to rotate through, and put them up on a server where google can see it.

The concept of Superstars is interesting--different icons for different levels or types of "stars"; don't care much for the "cycle through" process for selection... I'd rather see a right-click bring up a menu, much like hover does on other items (like on the sender's or a contact's name).

Superstars and Quicklinks FTW! I want to use stars for messages I want to come back to (save for later) and for a to-do list of emails I have to respond to. I've tried labelling messages to save for later, but you can't label an individual message in a thread, so you have to trawl the thread to remember why you saved it - with new star options, I can yellow-star messages to respond to and blue-star the messages I just want to highlight. Plus labelling is a longer process than just hitting the star.
Quicklinks could just be mighty useful.

Been playing with a few of the features and the Superstars might actually be useful. Like Gina said, it's not sortable or searchable but is good as just a quick visual indicator. The only thing is that GTDInbox puts the action label on all starred items.
Hide unread count is good, and the count still is there in a tooltip when you hover. Quick link is great, and now I only have myself to blame for the Keyboard Shortcuts not being easy to remember, since I made them up!

Keyboard shortcuts was needed and is awesome. Snake is a time waster, but fun when you get bored. I like the different starring options, as they provide a visual guide when you are looking at all mail.
I would like to see a Lab option to expand the number of results on a search page from 20 per page to a customizable amount, like 50 or 100.
DownloadSquad claims that eventually Google Labs will open up to developers, which would be nice and would allow a lot of customizability, which addons like Better Gmail provide, to be directly incorporated into Gmail.
This could be the start of something grand!

@cbiggins: Since it looks like they incorporate features that have been greasemonkey'd in, maybe it's time to try that on our own. How diff would it be? Trap the rightclick menu and add a few sub-menus. Find a way to conveniently get the templates without having to change the GM script when you add new ones. Hmmmm.
Thanks, Gina. This was an awesome little bit of news at the end of a generally cr*ppy day.

Of all the additions I think superstars is the best and I have already used it to start "starring" my messages. The way I see it as being useful is that I already have a bunch of filters that label certain emails and now I can add a star based on an action or status of the email, for example say one of my filter's is "work" and I realize my boss has sent a request but I need to get info from some one else I can use the exclamation star or even using the check star to motivate me completing tasks from the 25 plus emails that are sent back and forth to me almost everyday. While it is not a problem for me clicking through a right click menu would be nice, as well as a search by star option.

I guess these features are somewhat useful for me but I would have much rather seen something like contacts and tasks that would sync with Outlook through their Google Sync application or delayed send.
Maybe this is just the start and bigger things are coming!
Honest to God though, I just don't see the infatuation that people seem to have with folders. Folders would fundamentally change the way that Gmail works and I am in no hurry to go back to them myself. I love being able to have multiple labels for each message. The built in Gmail search or Google Desktop Search turns up what I am looking for faster than I could ever browse through a folder.
Label + Archive = Folders
Yes, I know that label lists can become very long this way. Mine is over 125 labels long. Thing is, my label box has been collapsed for a very long time. I deal with messages in my inbox. I delete or label and archive when done and I use search if I need it again. Easy.

Gmail is on the slide. Still in Beta, and then these lukewarm 'features' are nervously sneaked through in 'Labs'. With all their resources Google still seem unable to launch anything with confidence. I don't want to have to hack Gmail, add Greasemonkey scripts or any other bizarre workarounds - I want Gmail to take on board the fact that people have had to hack just to get obvious and basic functionality.
This, and the fuss being made over Firefox 3 (woohoo it now only robs 500mb of memory!) and the Iphone 2.0 (omg - GPS! on a phone!!!) really shows the power of hype and spin. These new 'features' are distractions - they miss the point, it is as if the developers never read any of the incredible feedback available to them for free. Look at the Lifehacker Gmail wishlists - it's all there. The Gizmodo iphone list shows just how limitied the iphone 1.0 was. But of course the market cannot have all of this, it has to be patronised and strung along with stupid fluff...

E. g., Regular yellow star for something I must do or answer, blue star for «waiting for» someone else's action, ! for ultra-priority stuff, etc. It's just a matter of defining some categories and, most important (and hard), sticking to them.
Another useful feature -- sorry, ultra-geeks! -- is the signature on top. I, like most people I know, reply on top, and now I'm already sparing a few seconds in the cut-paste.
But in one thing I absolutely agree with you: signature picker should be on the list.

Somehow I can't figure out how to add anything other than the default "star" to a message. Tips?
Also -- anyone know of a way to merge conversations? I recently got 50 replies to a baby announcement, of which 40 went into the correct conversation and 10 remained "orphans". I'd love to tell Gmail to incorporate the orphans into the correct conversation, but it seems impossible. Tips?

Gmail's lack of a Contact Manager is what's still keeping my address book on Yahoo. At least give me the option not to add every email address that pops through my inbox into the Contact List!

Yes, but when will they ever update the GoogleTalk client?? The Gmail web-based chat has accrued tons of cool features, and the client hasn't been updated in like a year!

These feature add-ons aren't really part of the Gmail team's "official" upgrades to Gmail. These are things that other Googlers came up with in there 20% time on other projects. See this article for the details: [www.techcrunch.com]
I'd like to get paid for spending 20% of my time developing stuff like snakey! ;-)

These features are cute gimmicks, but I'd love to see something more useful.
Has anyone mashed up Gmail with OpenCalais or some other tagging tools? It would be great if Google made it easy to perform text mining on your emails in batch mode and write back tags or other annotations. I suppose you can do it off line, using POP or IMAP to download everything, but that defeats the benefit of storing everything in the cloud.

Quick Links - A cinch to use, could come in handy.
Superstars - A drop down list would work better than clicking to cycle through the choices.
Snakey - Yea! :D

These are great but it would really be cool to have the gmail interface module like igoogle pages. This way you could drag certain sections in order to change the layout to your liking.
Also wouldn't mind getting the list of labels as a seperate button next to more actions with the ability to select more then on label at a time.
Would also like to disable certain features from showing up on the page (google talk, quick contacts...).

@Joe Clark: When it comes to "standards", Google has pretty much always gone its own way (out to "change the world" and all). Of course, actual coding ability has little to do with policy decisions--half the world "top-posts"; and if Gmail didn't top-post, then I probably wouldn't use it**: the most recent stuff always belongs at the top because the default starting point for almost everything is at the top and, of course, no one wants to waste their time wading down through a whole mess of stuff they've already seen to get to the newest stuff right? :D (Well, apparently half the world DOES want to.)
(**Nah, I'd still use it--I'd just think they're stupid to do it any other way but the way that I think is right. :D)

In yet another of the ways in which Google can't code worth shit, not only does Gmail still top-post by default, it permits top-posting assholes to place their signature on top of the uselessly forwarded text - and also deems the actual standard for signaure separation, return-dash-dash-space-return, a bug you can opt out of.

Thats awesome they posted the wish list from the gmail features wishlist post!
It goes to show that our voices do count (in this case comments), and they actually listen to what their consumers want. A rarity for a big company this day and age.

Well, the good thing--possibly the best thing--about these particular new features is that they can be enabled/disabled for those who want/don't want them, thereby either enlarging your Gmail startup download or not--as each user desires. We could use some more features like that. :D

@dualsub2006: I reallydon't know when I got them. I haven't been on GMail since before they were released. I just checked it this morning when I got to work (and after seeing the Lifehacker post) and there they were. I assume I got them in the first wave because I've received the last three or four updates right away.

Hey, all you gmail fans, help me out here! I tried using Gmail for my business but had to go back to Thunderbird because Gmail insists on displaying my gmail address along with my "myname@mybiz.com" address in the header. That's a deal breaker for me, and I think for anyone who has a business. I've searched here and Ask MeFi but I haven't found a way to mask/remove it. Anybody know of one? Thanks in advance!

some of those things are cool, like the superstars..
BUT!
one critical feature of gmail missing is the ability to send from a different user account, not just the "on behalf of" but being able to supply SMTP information for it.!

YET - it would be great to have a function to MERGE CONVERSATIONS. This seems like an easy one, to my mind. Maybe not...

I think that gmail and other google apps could have better features (like I said on another post, I would like the ability to quick switch "identities" to be able to switch from one google account to another without doing login/logout, and other gmail related that I saw already posted here)
But hey I like the way they work!
It appears that most of the time they work just for fun, and best things comes for fun :-D
Who cares if it's still in beta, if they continue to work on new features I'll be happy.
Speaking of gmail, people complains about folders, well labels and quick links could easily replace folders, especially the latter, think about it

Mouse gestures are really cool.
Quick links entries extend out of their designated region and looks very ugly.
Superstars are too many to get confused though don't know about how others will use.
I think superstars should be scrapped.
Snakey - another way to waste time online. I love it.
Finally ,I can't seem to find the purpose of fixed width fonts.
@Michael Kizer: Thankyou ,I was little skeptical if these are official Google upgrades.
Yeah the best feature is that they are all optional.

Quick Links is the only feature that I've found to be really useful so far (for me, of course). I've been storing my Saved Searches in my browser's bookmarks since the Gmail 2 was implemented; now I can put them into Quick Links--available wherever I login to Gmail.

The "on behalf of" thing is a quirk of the way Outlook handles Gmail's mail headers... so it's a combination of Outlook and Gmail that causes the problem.
Last I checked (a couple of months ago) there was no way around it without using hosted Google services.

I just checked and I have no Labs in settings yet. I am little geeky excited about this since greasemonkey scripts are not yet working with Firefox 3. Especially looking forward to the email addict setting. Wondering how much I'll actually use it though.
Now, when do we get Google Toolbar for Firefox 3?
Snake makes me a bit nostalgic for my first Commodore 64.
Having open development has so much potential for future innovation.

i don't get the point of most of those "tweaks." I just want to be able to change the reply-to address in my replies and change my signature based on the e-mail address the original e-mail was sent to.
and what about contact management? I know Google likes to have fun but it seems more like time wasting to me. Hopefully they will open the "Labs" up to some useful tweaks in the future.

Just a thought, but wouldn't it be possible to use the new 'Quick Links' feature to replicate folders? A saved search for email with tag 'folderA' = /folderA, View of search for email with tags 'folderA & subfolder1' = /folderA/subfolder1'. It wouldn't be quite as convenient as expanding / contracting drop-downs, but should give pretty similar functionality - and you'd still be able to have the same items in multiple 'locations' if they had multiple tags.

I don't need folders per say but if the gmail team could do a collapsable hierarchy of labels that would be awesome. Right now I have labels for all the classes I take which leads to quite a long list. If I could have all my Psych classes collapse down to a single Psych label I would be ever most grateful.
