Google Gadgets Adds Widgets, Sidebar to Linux Desktop
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 10:00 PM on June 5, 2008
Linux only: Google Gadgets, an open-source, stand-alone app that runs gadgets from Google Desktop and the Universal iGoogle repository, closes the widest gap between Google Desktop's Linux version and its Mac and Windows cousins. Users of Screenlets already can use iGoogle and other widgets on the desktop, but this release adds the sidebar and desktop search integration that make Google Desktop a greater sum than its individual parts. Installing Google Gadgets requires compiling from source at this point, and I had trouble completing the process in Ubuntu 8.04, so let's hear about any simplified instructions or scripts you run across. Google Gadgets is a free download for Linux systems only.

oh! ok, i had installed: libcurl3, libcurl3-dbg, libcurl3-gnutls, libcurl4-openssl-dev libcurl-ocaml
also: libmozjs0d, libmozjs0d-dbg, libmozjs-dev, spidermonkey, g++-4.1, g++-4.1-multilib, g++-4.2, g++-4.2-multilib
and all packages at the top of this site; and also all packages with every needed dependencie;
i dont know why but now it works!
after the package installation "sudo ln -s /usr/bin/g++-4.2 /usr/bin/g++;"
now: sudo ./configure; sudo make; sudo make check; sudo make install;
then: sudo cp -rf /usr/local/lib/ /usr/lib; (ok, it's not nice but it works)
now u can start the google gadgets with "/usr/local/bin/ggl-gtk;"

Or just install Fedora 9 with KDE4. It looks like Fedora could finally be the Ubuntu killer we've been waiting for.

@nuke_you: At least until Kubuntu 8.10 comes out, because that'll likely integrate KDE4 too.
And were you seriously waiting for an Ubuntu killer?
