Firefox 3 Release Candidate 2 Now Available
Posted by Gina Trapani at 6:18 AM on June 5, 2008
All platforms: The Mozilla developers want to get the next Firefox milestone just right, so they've issued another release candidate for your testing pleasure. Firefox 3 RC2 includes bug fixes from RC1. If you haven't dipped your toes into the Firefox 3 pool, the RC2 water is warm—it's the most stable testing build they're likely to issue before the official release, which is on schedule to drop this month. Check out our complete field guide to testing Firefox 3. Firefox 3 RC 2 is a free download for all platforms, meant for willing testers only.

I'm not seeing FF3RC2, just RC1...and autoupdate doesn't get it either. It still says June 5th for the release on Moz's site. hmm.

There seems to be a different, new and improved Firefox 3 coming out every few weeks or so. I'll download Firefox 3 the moment they start calling it simply "Firefox 3".

I know what I'll be updating when I get home from work!
Thank goodness for Mr. Tech's extension that lets me make almost every extension compatible with the latest build (all but the ones that don't provide secure updates).

Meanwhile, those of us who use Ubuntu and try to stick to what's in the official repositories are still waiting on RC1...

Copy the download link for your choice, and change the rc1 to rc2.

It looks like they updated the page aesthetically, but not the links. I altered the link to the English (US) version slightly and was able to download.

Just open firefox and do help->check for updates.
I was going to install it, but it says nightly testers wont work, so I'm holding out, since thats running my other extensions.

Disable compatibility with Nightly Tester Tools:

I've also read somewhere that a beta version of Greasemonkey works with RC1, but I don't have time to google it now...

@Tactical-Incineration-Development: To each their own, yanokwa mentioned the RAM prices. Sorry, Firefox is simply the most productive browser with its plethora of extensions. I can't even use IE other machines, I get too frustrated when I can't do everything faster. FF3 is working out great and cutting down about 3/4 it's RAM. Still 250M, but better than a leaky gig.

2@Tactical-Incineration-Development: ram is about $25/gig. if you want that kind of memory usage, use lynx.

Not sure if anyone's interested but this quick and dirty method for upgrading an existing Portable Firefox 3 RC1 to RC2 seems to work for me (and should suffice until an officially updated version comes):
* Download Firefox 3 RC2.
* Extract it to a folder (if you have WinRAR installed then right-click the Firefox installer you just downloaded and select the Extract to Firefox Setup 3.0 RC 2\ option -- not sure how you'd go about doing it with another program).
* Copy the contents of the Firefox Setup 3.0 RC 2\nonlocalized\ folder to your FirefoxPortableTest\App\firefox folder.
* Copy the contents of the Firefox Setup 3.0 RC 2\localized\ folder to your FirefoxPortableTest\App\firefox folder.
And hopefully that should do the trick!

If you check "proposed Updates" on Hardy it will come through, but I think Ubuntu are holding back on an RC update because of extension incompatibilities. Fine by me, I didn't see much difference between beta 5 and a RC1 apart from the fact that Greasemonkey wasn't working anymore. ;-)

Sigh, RC1 crashed on me a lot, and I just got my first crash with RC2. My guess is that one of the extensions is tickling an FF3 bug. For example, if enabled, the Interclue extension would make FF3RC1 crash within a few minutes.

As I have just got most of my extensions playing nice with FF3B5 (using Mr Tech Toolkit to enable any that haven't been updated yet) and as Ubuntu are only offering RC1 (in hardy-proposed), I will wait until the final FF3 is out before messing around any further.
I'm thinking that a nice new clean profile and an orgy of extension installation is just what I will need to welcome the arrival of the final FF3... in a few weeks ;)

@SilverWave:
I wish there was a easy way(read: file > backup) to export just your passwords and bookmarks - I know how to do it with the built in bookmark exported and an extension but I wish it was easier to make a new profile (ie: no extensions and default settings)

Well, I kind of accidentally upgraded. Oh well. I'll just go with it. I was actually enjoying RC1. Just a few crashes. Hopefully RC 2 will be just slightly more stable. I'm still not seeing the huge memory savings. It is using 70k to 90k.... which is exactly what FF 2 was using.

I must've hit enter by accident. Both RC1 & RC2's user agent is 3.0, so anything that worked in RC1 will work in RC2.

my extensions still work and everything looks the same, so I'm assuming there was some behind the scenes tweaking? Or maybe I'm just a blind MORON, and I cannot see the Radical aesthetic changes?

Does the PortableApps version of FF3 use more memory than regular FF3? Because I used the portable version for a while, and it used a LOT more memory than FF2 does. At work and at home.

I wonder if they'll fix the menu bar on XP - black on dark blue is not easy to read. Been that way since the first betas.

I kind of miss the days when I was always using Mozilla alphas and betas as they came out, but constantly upgrading and checking compatibility became too much of a timesink.
Dying for the official Fx3 release though. Not many known bugs left now, are there?

@mDuo13: Going from 2 to 3 has been a LOT less painful than I remember going from 1 to 2 was, mostly because of the automated update checks. Plus it feels like the betas for 3 were just much better products than the betas for 2 (or 1!).

Excellent, and definitely more stable, but I do have one problem: the add-ons manager keeps telling me to restart firefox to install, which I have already done, but alas its still there. Foxmarks doesn't seem to work on this release either, and its been available for a while, no?
Would it be best to uninstall this release, and install it again?

With more compatible add-ons and significantly less RAM usage, this baby will probably usurp Opera for me as my "quick" browser, though I still generally used Firefox 2, now I only need one.
