X-Mouse Button Control Makes Better Use of Extra Mouse Buttons
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 10:10 PM on June 3, 2008
Windows only: X-Mouse Button Control, a free Windows mouse utility, is a highly-configurable tool that you set your extra mouse buttons, or even your standard set of three, to do all kinds of helpful tasks. Like the less-configurable X-Mouse Gizmo, you can add copy/paste functionality to a button, but you can also have a right rocker button perform a Print Screen capture, or set the two buttons to act as back and forward buttons only when Firefox is open. For those looking for more control over their pointers, X-Mouse Button Control is a powerful tweaking tool. X-Mouse Button Control is a free download for Windows systems only.

Yes you can do this with Linux as well under the advanced compiz fusion configuration.

@That_Eagle_Scout!: logitechs software isnt exactly the best out there, but the mouses themselves are definately good. the only reason i keep logitechs software running is cuz i have those fancy gaming mice with the on mouse sensitivity setting buttons.

to those of you who have logitech mice (not sure if it works on keyboards as well) and are not happy with their software, there is a free app called uberOptions. It basically adds a crapload of functionality to logitech stock options. I've been using it for a couple of years now. Works great! I recommend it to anyone with a logitech mouse.
Quoted from their site: "Enable all options on all buttons in SetPoint"

Ahh. Much better than that Razer Habu crapware, which doesn't let me use my Back button for some reason.

I use a 5-button GE dual scroll rodent which you can program to do all sorts of things with. I can never remember what I programmed the buttons to do, so I just use it as a regular 2-button rodent.
The two wheels are very handy for scrolling either horizontally and vertically over music scores, which is why I like this mouse (from Target, inexpensive).

Here's a question for anyone who's running this... If I set the middle button to paste, will it still allow me to middle click links to open them or tabs to close them in Firefox? Or do I need an application specific rule for that, which would then not paste in FF?

The Mac version is called "USB Overdrive" and has been around for like ten years.

does this use less resources than the stupid logitech driver? i have two process running just for my mouse - kmw_show.exe at 3.5 megs and kmw_run.exe at 3.3 megs. i'd like to get rid of these if i can, i need the ram on this old machine...

@sgodun: Thanks very much. I have a 4-button mouse, but could only configure it when I had the default mouse plugged in. I'd just never really put effort into finding something like this.

@atomicrabbit: Thank you! I was always upset about how crippled the SetPoint software was. I need it for my multiple sensitivities, but I really needed more options!

I just tried this program and quickly uninstalled it. For me it won't replace X-Mouse Gizmo. It doesn't auto-copy selection and the default middle-click to paste is actually sending Ctrl-V. Shift-insert is probably better.
Like X-Mouse Gizmo, X-Mouse Button doesn't play well with programs that do special things with middle-mouse that you want to preserve. For firefox this can be worked around using the AutoCopy addon.
I was also hoping for focus-follows-mouse with an exclude list (applications which must be focused by clicking the title bar); I stopped using X-Mouse Gizmo because Visual Studio forces itself in front of other programs when focused--which will sometimes crash a program being debugged. I wouldn't mind this being a seperate program but since X-Mouse Button doesn't auto-copy, the middle-click to paste isn't much benefit to me.

I second uberOptions. It's a fantastic tweak for SetPoint, allowing you fine control over all your buttons and even allowing you to create separate profiles for different applications. Very helpful for any Logitech mouse/keyboard.

Microsoft gives you software that allows you to configure your controller with their mice. It's imaginatively called 'Microsoft Mouse'. You can set which buttons to what (it defaults middle button to Instant Viewer by default) and even do it by application, which can lead to some interesting tricks on colleagues (switch all buttons in browsers to close, etc.).

Hmm, seems to be a very nice app, and consumes relatively little RAM (not a problem anyway, since I have 4 GB of it).
However, I can't figure out what Right X Button and Left X Button mean. It does not seem to be a rocker.
Any ideas?
