Pronounce Tells You How to Say It
Posted by Gina Trapani at 9:00 PM on June 2, 2008
All platforms with Firefox: Whether English isn't your native language or you're just tired of wondering whether you're reading that unfamiliar word in your mind correctly, the Pronounce Firefox extension is a very handy tool. With the extension installed, highlight a word on any web page, right click, and choose "Pronounce" from the context menu. Have your speakers on, because using pronunciation audio from the Merriam Webster dictionary, Pronounce will tell you how to say it (though with a US dictionary, words such as "leisure" and "router" likely won't work for the Australian tongue). But anyway, give it a try: milquetoast. Pronounce is a free download for all platforms running Firefox, and it's Firefox 3-ready.

Highlighted 'Linux' instead, selected 'pronounce'. An eerie silence ensued.

This is fantastic. This is beneficial to even English speakers. Lots of graduates from well-known universities or professionals pronounce some words incorrectly every now and then (myself included).

American English? No mention of anything else.

Mine works fine. There's about a one second pause between clicking "Pronounce" and hearing the word, I'm assuming that's the program looking up the word in the dictionary. That's why if you type something like sdf it doesn't give a pronounciation.

Great extension!
Sometimes it is a woman, other times it is a man pronouncing the word :P

...and sometimes it's a strangely androgynous shemale to whom you are secretly attracted. Or perhaps that's the cough medicine talking.

@ICEBreaker: You make a very good point. Can someone test it with "foyer" please?
Whenever I hear "foy-yer" I just cringe. It's "foy-yeah" dammit.

I've been playing with this for a few minutes and this is cool. My only comment is that if the word is not in the dictionary you get dead silence, it should beep or something. This happened when I tried, Firefox, which was the first word I tried. It also doesn't have "Merriam" which is kind of funny since thats the dictionary it uses.

I use WordWeb for this. Just point at a word (rather than having to select it), then ctr+right click and you get the definition plus a button there to pronounce it if you want. I use it all the time although the latest version is a bit buggy with Firefox 3. I'm told that will be fixed in next version.

Anyone having trouble with the small icon not showing up on the menu bar? Large icon works fine but I'd like to be able to continue using small icons throughout.

@Jim (The Canuck One): Never mind - I just tried it myself. "Foy-yer" Sigh.

@gfrobe: Thank you! Thank You!
I was about to download this when I read your comment. I use WordWeb all the time at home and work. Couldn't imagine not having it. I feel a bit silly, but I never noticed the little speaker icon to hear pronunciations. Thanks for mentioning that.

Great. Just great. I live in Brazil but read and write English a lot. The problem is written English gives little clue of how a word is spoken, so you may end having a large vocabulary with little speaking skills. That's where this extension helps a lot, specially for less used words. (I hope I've spelled everything right :o)

@Jim
All the dictionaries I have immediate access too give foy-er as the preferred pronunciation, foy-yay as an acceptable alternative, and fwah-yay as another alternative. To my uneducated ear, each one sounds progressively more French, with the last pronunciation possibly being the most authentic.

This is useful, I would love to have something like this in French (or other languages!)

Now we just need one to correct incorrect sayings like "I could care less". *rolls eyes*

American dictionaries show the pronunciation of foyer as \ˈfȯi(-ə)r, ˈfȯi- ˌ(y)ā *also* ˈfwä-ˌyā\. Either one is correct and subject to your preference.
