Add Favicons to the Bookmark Toolbar
Posted by Gina Trapani at 11:30 PM on June 2, 2008
Mac users rockin' Firefox 3 who like to see web site icons on their bookmark toolbar already know that the previously mentioned Mac Favicon extension isn't Firefox-3 ready yet. But a user style can give you back those pretty icons instead. You'll need Stylish to install the Mac bookmark toolbar favicons user style, but it'll get your toolbar looking as good as the Windows version.

The point is that if a bookmark on the toolbar has a recognizable favicon, you can delete the text of the name and make it a button, which takes up much less space.

I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure you don't need Stylish to enable this. You should be able to just paste the code into the userChrome.css file and restart Firefox.

@JamesF:
Exactly what I do. That's been my only complaint about FF3 so far, that I couldn't add Favicons yet.

Smart Bookmarks Bar 1.4.1?
It adds icons to folders though, and I don't like that. So I edited the Add-on's CSS myself.
It's much easier than removing the name from each one of your bookmarks so that it just leaves the blank icon.

Semi-related side note:
You can update your Google Search icon to reflect the new design.

Does anyone know how I can put an icon for a bookmark if the site has no favicon? There are a few sites I really like, but they don't have favicons, so putting them on my toolbar won't work visually.

Like SenorDunda said, anyone know of a plugin that allows one to change a favicon or set a favicon for a certain site/bookmark? I've heard of favicon picker or whatever it's called but it doesn't seem to work in FF3 (Despite forced install). It installs but when I go to 'search a favicon', the 'next' buttons don't work.

@caedus: I was going to say the same thing, but then I realized this is an article for Mac users.

@JamesF:
The funny thing is that I always remove the favicons from my Bookmarks bar (which annoy me on the Windows skins). My Bookmarks bar is filled with simple text-based mini-bookmarks like this: gm gr gn ym wp (gfx) (mob) W I EF FE.... This stands for: Google Mail Google Reader Google News Yahoo Mail Wordpress Graphics (folder) Mobility (folder) Wikipedia lookup (javascript) IMDb lookup (javascript) English->French dictionary lookup (javascript) French->English dictionary lookup (javascript) This way I have 40-odd links on my Bookmarks bar (on my 1440x900 work notebook) in a way I find much more easily recongisable than favicons. Me favicons? No thanks! :) -- Saisinko salmiakkia?

@rabiddachshund: For whatever reason, some themes (including the default mac FF3 theme) don't have favicons in the bookmark bar. It's really annoying.
