RateBeer Finds You a Good Brew
Posted by Adam Pash at 12:00 AM on June 1, 2008
Web site RateBeer contains an enormous user-rated database of beers to help you find your new favourite beer. Last weekend we highlighted Beer Suggest, a new site scouring the net to bring you a good beer, but several commenters pointed out RateBeer (and BeerAdvocate) as sites that have been around for much longer—which means they boast more reviews and a more robust database of brews. So while you're enjoying some nice late spring weather this weekend, check out RateBeer to find something tasty to relax with.

I have some Budweiser Budvar (czech beer) cooling in the fridge right now :D I'll go see what kind of rating it gets but it's one of my favourites.

I second janvanhoef. As i live in Belgium the beers here are great, just check out: Duvel, Leffe (dark), Hoegaerden, Jupiler, Stella Artois, ...

I live in Belgium, so I don't need rating lists like these. Just step in any half decent grocerystore over here and you can pick from dozens of quality beers. (except for west-vleteren, but that's just 30 miles from here)
Downside to all this : it's VERY hard to find any non-belgian beer. And I'm reading more and more how american brewers are creating better beers every year.
Maybe I'll check out ratebeer's forums to set up a trade agreement ...

Here's a 3rd to living in Belgium...and having carte blanche for good beer without much effort.
But Jupe as a good beer? It's what the paid-under-the-table workers drink at their 10 a.m. break.

Pretty goofy, RateBeer is blocked at work but BeerSuggest is not. My favorite beers tend to be brewed by my friends or myself. The ones I do like to buy change almost monthly.

I use ratebeer exclusively on my show. goodbeershow.com Beer Advocate is comparable. Drink good Beer.

Stella Artois, oooooh the hangovers I've had after drinking that stuff. It's very popular across here in Scotland and is nicknamed "wife beater".

@jerbone:
Why would your employers block a beer site? Conspiracy I say, conspiracy! Without my every three hours pint, I wouldn't be able to get through the day. [sarcasm, of course...I think]

OH! And I forgot - there's a liquor store right by where I live that actually posts the ratebeer ratings on the glass doors in front of the beer. I use them as a useful gauge when I decide to try something new. And to the Belgians on this thread: You're lucky! The Belgians that we get here in the states are all diluted down to around 4-7% ABV. From what I've read, the beers over there are much more powerful (not only in Belgium but all EU countries)

yes, Leffe (dark) is very tasty. :)
But we have some very good beers in Latvia too (Tervetes, Buaskas, Piebalgas - if it happens you come here). But these pages could be useful i i go abroad.

@janvanhoef: i traveled to belgium just for the beers. the orval is better there as it does not seem to travel well. i never had a bad beer there. but stella artois? that is mass produced stuff and the only real good mass produced beers are from carlsberg. why do you need to have anything but belgium beers. considering the flems and walloons both like beer and fries, isn't that enough in common to stay one country? and yes, here in the US, belgium style beers are now all the rage with craft brewers and they are getting very good. could the US supplant belgium someday as the best beer country? perhaps if belgium becomes two countries we may.

There's also BeerAdvocate.com which has a great community. You can track your beers, rate them, look at which foods and glassware go with certain beers, etc. If you are a Beer Advocate and Respect Beer then it is definitely worth a look.
