Zindus Syncs Thunderbird with Google Contacts
Posted by Adam Pash at 6:00 AM on May 31, 2008
All platforms running Thunderbird: Thunderbird extension Zindus syncs your Google contacts with Thunderbird's address book. Just install the extension, give it your Gmail username and password (it supports both @gmail and Google Apps domains), and hit the Sync Now button to synchronise names, email addresses, phone numbers, IM handles, and more. Zindus does its best to handle any conflicts and walk you through resolutions, but you can also sync the contacts to a separate list if you just want to give it a try. The free, cross-platform Zindus is a fantastic solution for Thunderbird users jealous of Address Book's recent Google Contact Sync update.

Sweet hopefully this works better than GCALDaemon.

So now I can have every unsubscribe email address needlessly stored in my Thunderbird contacts too? Joy!
seriously though, I do want more integration between my contacts file, but Google really need to get their collective finger out and give us a usable contact manager (and with integration into Google Calendar for birthdays... but now I'm getting offtopic)

And before you guys bash me for using Outlook, I have a WinMo phone... which soon will be upgraded to a Crackberry, but for now, I just want to sync my google contacts!

@math0ne: It does ('cause it actually works)--very simple to install and config. I chose to sync Gmail with a new zindus/gmail_address address book instead of the [default] Personal address book--eliminates possible conflicts. It's good to have my main contact list accessible from Thunderbird, too; I use both Gmail's web interface and IMAP with Thunderbird all the time. So, now I've got Gmail contacts and Google Calendar events in Thunderbird/Lightning and all sync'd up with each other. Life is good (well, it's better anyway).

Not very happy...tried to sync Thunderbird with this, then sync Mac Address Book with Safari 10.5.3 (YOU know, I want it ALL!) I ended up with some duplicates and had to weed them out by hand...No intelligent merge or override options.

@aaron8301:
I have a CrackBerry and I still use Outlook. For personal mail Thunderbird rocks but when it's time to get some work done I use Outlook 2007 and BlackBerry.

Yes indeed, I can confirm this works great. Way better than GCALDaemon.

To follow up on nobeastofierce: this would only be useful if it works one way - Thunderbird to Gmail. I'm still stunned that Gmail doesn't understand the difference between what Thunderbird calls a "collected address" and someone who's in your addressbook. I really understood the full import of this distinction when I first used Plaxo and added a little over 1000 address that I didn't need...

It should be more automated, which means there's a lot of space for improvements.
Right now, I'm on my fifth iteration and there are still some conflicts (diffs between TB and GM) to solve by hand. Ok, I have 1000+ contacts (which need to be weeded), but still...

Another idea for the developers: please look at Del Duplicates, one of the best TB extensions, and copy the way they ask the user to solve conflicts.
As to me, after 10 iterations, maybe I'll just delete all TB contacts, edit them in GMail, and sync again.
Zindus helps, but doesn't make coffee... yet.

Here's another idea, if you have a huge number of contacts.
1. Delete all «unnamed» contacts in TBird (by this I mean all that, instead of a name, have something@something.com )
2. Do the same in GMail.
3. Sync with Zindus.

WARNING: MASSIVE BUG!!!!!
When using a non-English version of Thunderbird, GMail's contacts are simple deleted. Luckily I had all contacts already in the English version (in another computer) and could use the CSV file to repopulate both TB's and resync with GMail.
Beware!!!

Tried on Ubuntu 8.04 with Thunderbird. Connection to google server failed and got lots of errors. Use with caution.

UPDATE - one of the developers got back to me lightning fast and said there is an issue on some systems. A restart of thunderbird resolved the problem.

Seems like the problem is as much from Google (which doesn't recognize non-English *.csv files, at least in an English interface) as from Zindus, which has to improve localization. Again, use with caution or wait for a more stable version.
