Help Mozilla Set a Firefox 3 Download Record
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 12:05 AM on May 30, 2008
Firefox 3's creators are looking to set a Guinness World Record for Most Software Downloaded in 24 Hours, and have set up a "Download Day 2008" page to organize the effort. The download date for the browser is still "some time in June," but you can watch the Download Day page for updates. [via]

Joseph: you can right click on a mac now? Crazy.
Anyway, wouldn't this record by default probably go to any high priority M$ patch that gets pushed out? It would be hard to beat that, or does that not count as a download because it's an update or something?

Patches from Microsoft tend to get rolled out over a number of days. Since people can set times for downloads in the middle of the night, or not have the option switched in, it would be rare for huge numbers of people to access a patch in 24 hours. Some take even longer (Vista SP1, for instance, was very much staggered in terms of being pushed to Windows Update). Plus, as you say, it's not exactly a conscious, deliberate download.

@Joseph
Just right-click, then hit the escape button.

pledged, can their servers handle the massive traffic?

well, RPC1 in Ubuntu is running a lot better than Beta 5. Now if only Flash would be fully working I'd be happy.

Now if they could just fix the "right click" Google maps issue in OS X, we would have something.

the best thing about this is the map showing where all the pledges are coming from, most interestingly i cant find a single country without a handfull of pledges, firefox is truely global

@kylenalepa: And based on the link, they are. Sorry, it wasn't clear from the post.

I would hope that they would wait until Firefox 3 goes gold for them to organize a download day.

@kylenalepa: I would too...unless you want to set a record for downloading a browser that is still buggy.

...Or, you can right-click, and THEN press "ALT". FWIW.

@Joseph: That's an issue in other OS's, too (if you are referring to the browser context menu obscuring the google maps page's context menu). As a workaround, you can either hold down "ALT" when right clicking, or right-click & release, then right-click and hold (while selecting). That's what works for me, anyway.

Thoose bugs should be solved until it's release, you got to have in mind that it's a release candidate.

Setting a record for downloading a crappy browser? No thanks.
Now if Opera were to do it...

That's such a cool map with a terrific "identify the country" interactive feature. Interestingly, as of this moment, there are 329 pledges from Iran, and only 19 from Iraq. Humm.

There will be at least one more Release Candidate before the final release.. I'm using RC1 and its great. I'm not too worried about the bugs.
Anyway....
Pledged.
Can't wait for D Day.

@SowndOfDeth: from the FAQ:
Q: Do we have to reach a specific number of downloads in order to set the record?
A: This is the first record attempt of its kind so there is no set number. We'd really like to outdo the number of Firefox 2 downloads on its launch day, which was 1.6 million. Let's shoot for 5 million--the sky is the limit!
So, it kind of looks like the number to beat is zero.

Funny, just the other day I decided to wait at least a month to upgrade and see how many of my essential extensions get upgraded.
No Thanks

Yeah, this is really all organized. Ummm, what date IS download day? Can we not put it in the post, or at least in the linked article? How can I pledge to download FF3 on the correct date, when I don't know what the correct date IS?

@brackenthebox: Well, more realistically, the number to beat is Firefox 2's 1.6 million.
Pledged. I'm looking forward to the Awesome Bar, the memory improvements, and the new Gecko. All kinds of improvements that I thought should've been in 2.

why? Is this going to help bring Firefox back to roots of NOT being a big memory-hungry bloated POS? Doubt it.
Doing this is like paying for advertising a company on T-shirts you wear which I'd guess tons of folks here happily do.
