Bradicon Converts Most Any Image Into an Icon
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 10:00 PM on May 30, 2008
Web app Bradicon is a super-simple tool to convert most of the major graphics formats—JPG, PNG, BMP, or GIF—into icon files. We've previously posted a similar tool, but Bradicon's wider file range and two-step process make it a great bookmark for anyone fixing a desktop or personalizing a file package. Thanks, Jerame!

This is actually really cool. I used the company I work for's logo for our shared folder and it looks great. Not only that, instead of reading all the filder names, I just look for the one that has the logo on. It makes it quicker and easier. Definitely a tool to bookmark.

If anyone is interested, freeware "Img2icns" does this for the Mac.

It's a normal program though, not a web app so there's installing involved, but its tiny and it can convert a bunch at the same time.

This is definitely a nice little web app. At first I didn't think it was working for me however, since the icons weren't showing up using the advanced version. But, as soon as I switched over to simple version, there they were. Just thought I'd mention that in case anyone else experiences the same thing.

Personally, I just google searched for an icon plugin for Photoshop a few years ago, and I've been using 'shopping my icons ever since. I mean, it's not like Photoshop isn't freely available through those, um... "alternate methods" of downloading things...
Somehow I feel a link to this article is a good idea...

Too bad Leopards standard for icon sizes is 512px by 512px or this would actually be helpful. You might want to tag this one "Windows / Web Only"

As a downloadable, no-install alternative for Windows, there's Greenfish Icon Editor. It was just posted this morning at The Portable Freeware Collection, so I tried out each of them to compare.
Bradicon gave slightly smoother results at the same resolution, but Greenfish can do batch conversions and allows you to choose your resolution and color depth, from 16 to 256 and from black & white to 24-bit.

I think this is the best solution if you are looking for simple ICON designer and image-to-icon convert. It does a perfect job.

I wonder if they store and keep the icons you create

@The Amazing Ant: If you want something free your grandmother wouldn't tsk tsk at, Paint.NET has a plugin available for saving as icons or cursors.
Also, GIMP can save ICO files.

I appreciate all the alternatives presented in the comments, particularly Johnay's calling attention to GIMP, the editor I use most.
BTW, grandmothers are not the only honest people.

@Johnay: Haha, my grandmother likes the ummm, "borrowed" shall we call them, copies of movies I've made for her. I've almost gotten my mother to accept the idea of them as well, but you know how parents are...
My dad on the other hand, rents something from blockbuster, says "That was a great movie" and then asks me to make a copy of it for him... :P
I have nothing against Paint.NET, but since I have a real copy of Photoshop, (not a bittorrent special) I may as well use it. On the other hand, I do have the windows port GIMP 2 for its animated gif support... Never thought to try making icons in there, thanks for mentioning it. :)

If you're just making a square icon with no transparency you can also just save to a Windows Bitmap (.bmp) file and rename it to an icon (.ico). I'm guessing most Windows graphics editors can save as a Windows bitmap.
