Firefox 3 Add-on Compatibility Report
Posted by Gina Trapani at 11:14 AM on May 28, 2008
The hard-working developers over at Mozilla issue a status update on which popular Firefox extensions still need to get updated for Firefox 3. Here's 20 add-ons that are Firefox 3-compatible, and seven that aren't yet. If you're testing the Firefox 3 Release Candidate, you can force Firefox to use incompatible extensions with a configuration tweak, but to avoid possible wonkiness, it's better to wait for officially-compatible releases. In other Firefox 3 news, a second release candidate is slated for early June.

@Alex Leonard, shrutis, Greg B.: Thanks, testing it out on the spare laptop now =) Sorry, but I don't want too many FF version only my main laptop, would be too distracting ;)
No update/replacement for MinimizeToTray? =( I really liked that one, makes FF instantaneously accessible (although that's a double-edged sword when it comes to productivity)

Great, thanks. I have to run IETabs to run Altiris so that's a pretty key extension for me to have before upgrading here at work.

@Solanthos: I have IE Tab on RC1 as a legit add-on (I think).
It, like everything else runs sweet. Miss my Google Toolbar, but with TabMixPlus Easy DragToGo (to replace the probably dead Super DragAndGo), RoboForm and Adblock Plus (and a few others)I've decided to retire FF2.
Loving it!

@OX4: Nightly Tester will force Gmail manager through, you just have to manually type in your passwords each time you start the browser. Which is a pain in my ass.

So what did you learn Dorthy?
Well Toto, due to FX's users dependence on add-ons FX3 should not have been released until the most popular add-ons were compatible. Bark bark :-)

@Letsgohokies: If you use the nightly tester tools and force it to work it does. I missed it too, and using that made it work. Just dont update to 0.8, it doesnt work. 0.6.4 does.

@pschroeter: Amen brother. I hate the upgrade extension game. There should be a true extension manager that looks at what version I have, shows me updates available ONLY for the version I'm using.

The FF3 that automatically wandered onto my machine when I upgraded Ubuntu from Gutsy to Hardy looked ok but had MANY annoying, buggy qualities - and, I'm sorry, but I much prefer the old-fashioned address bar to the intelligent ones. (As I used to say to my staff at a previous job: "If I wanted intelligent workers, I'd hire them.")
Seriously, after a couple of weeks I found myself referring to it as "FireF*cked". I've since de-installed it and gone back to FF2.
When they have a full on production release I'll give it another shot but for now, I'm sticking with 2.

It an ironic twist that people aren't upgrading their Firefox version because they're waiting on third party extensions. The same concept that's supposed to put FF above all other browsers is now starting to hold it back.
I'm personally torn between FF2 and FF3 -- FF2 has my favorite add-ons (Gmail Manager, InFormEnter, Permit Cookies, and PicLens), yet FF3 is so much faster :/

There is a RC for Greasmonley 0.8 that is FF3 compatible.
[groups.google.com]
Contributors seem to consider it is ready for release but are waiting for final approval by the lead developper. I did not see any bug, appart for a bad interaction (memory leak) with SOME Netvibes gadgets (anyway I discovered trough this how much netvibes is a resource hog).

Google are dragging their heels on getting extensions up to date thought - and forcing most of their extensions to work with nightly tester tools results in constant crashes as far as I can see.

@kureshii: Tab Mix Plus is easy to get working in RC1 - just check the forum, there's a link to a beta (0.3.6.1.080416) which works absolutely fine.

Hey zabolyx, Today on Lifehacker you commented: "Just a warning FireKeeper (for Firefox) detected an image with embedded javascript on the Alex Polvi site. Just a heads up. I've never had a life from LH ping something bad before. Anyways NoScript would have blocked it anyways... Love my Firefox. " I was wondering if you could help me debug what the image you saw loading. There should not be any js images loading, so it is making me nervous that my site is hacked or something! Any ideas what you found? Thanks for your help figuring this out! Best regards, -Alex

What a revealing time to find out what add-ons are necessary and which ones aren't. I'm surprised how few I miss! Adblock Plus, Customize Google and MR Tech Local Install all seem to work with RC1. I miss the session manager of Tab Mix Plus, but not *that* badly. Linkification, PlainText Links, and the like were nice, but it's only an extra click or two to do it the "long" way.
Paste-and-Go, where did you go? I miss you! And btw, didn't Google use to recognize valid HTTP addresses & offer a link when you searched for a valid URL? Now, URL searches like this offer no results and no helpful link to www.mywebsiteexample.org like I was accustomed to. What gives? CoLT is a lifesaver, but I would still like a better plain-text-link solution that provided custom clipboard and right-click actions *without* pre-parsing every page I browse. Anyone?

I'm gonna hold out too. Not only for some incompatible extensions but also for some themes as well. "Night Launch" is an amazing theme and I am not going anywhere with out it 'cause Firefox by itself in freakin' ugly.
Is there a site or way you can check everything at once to see if your themes/extensions have been updated or will work with the new Firefox?

If you are going to use Nightly Tester Tools to force extension compatability it's a good idea to know how to open FF in safe mode or create a new profile before you begin. I did it the other way around and spent an entertaining hour trying to recover from the resulting crash. Making a backup might not be a bad idea either.

I'll repeat what I've written before:
"I desperately want an automated way to check the maximum version that my current extensions will work with, before I upgrade. I know I can look this information up in some file that FF uses, but it is a tremendous pain to dig through. I can't believe someone hasn't written an extension or program to do this (Hint,Hint)."
I've been digging through the install files in the extensions folder FF, but searching for the extension's name and the correct maxversion is a major pain.
If I see a bunch of extensions with maxversions of 3.0a3, pre. ect, I can safely assume these will be upgraded to work with the official release, right?
Why do I have to play extension roulette every time I upgrade?

For me, the Google Notebook extension is the big blocker. (Evernote drives me crazy with various issues, such the inability to sync some notes; del.icio.us is just too slow for me; and the notes features in Google Reader is too vestigial for my tastes.)
After that, greasemonkey is probably my next blocker, but not a huge one like Google Notebook.

I initially posted a blog entry ([abaditya.com]) to cover some of the extensions missing from the two links mentioned here.
Then I thought such a list would make a good addition to wikipedia, and added a section on extension compatibility to the List of Firefox extensions page:
[en.wikipedia.org]
I've added some of the popular extensions to get things started. Hope others add to it :).
