Troubleshoot Firefox in Safe Mode
Posted by Gina Trapani at 11:30 PM on May 27, 2008
You already know how to create multiple user profiles in Firefox for various types of online work; but if you're trying to troubleshoot an existing Firefox profile, start up the 'fox in "Safe Mode" to disable add-ons or reset other custom configuration. Use firefox -safe-mode at the command line to get there.

Funny that this was just posted today as I had to figure this out on my own yesterday when I finally upgraded to FF3 :P

On OS X Mac it is a little more involved. From the Mozilla help site:
How to start Firefox in Safe Mode
Close down Firefox completely: On the menu bar, click the Firefox menu, and select the Quit Firefox menu item.
Go to the Utilities directory (in the Applications folder) and open Terminal, then run:
/Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox -safe-mode
Firefox should start up with a Firefox Safe Mode dialog.
The /Applications part is the folder you have Firefox in. I don't so I had to modify that part.

There's also the simple Start -> All Programs -> Mozilla Firefox -> Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode)
:P

Or you can click Start > All Programs > Mozilla Firefox > Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode)

Neat, but what are these Command Lines¹ and Start Menus¹ or which you speak? Firefox is very much multi-platform, you know...

If you've set Firefox as your default browser, in the Start menu, right click on the Firefox (Internet) icon, and "Firefox Safe Mode" is one of the options there.
