Tag Galaxy Browses Flickr Photos in Space
Posted by Gina Trapani at 9:00 PM on May 23, 2008
New Flickr photo browser TagGalaxy explores the Flickr tag-o-verse using a planet metaphor. Type in a tag you're interested in, and TagGalaxy will instantly assemble a system of planets that represent those tags. Click on a planet to browse and zoom photos. Words don't do TagGalaxy's beautiful visualisation justice, so check out the screencast above for a quick demo if you're too lazy to head on over there yourself. (Sorry for the herky-jerkiness of the video, in reality it's smooth as silk on-page.)

Wish I could enter multiple tags from the get-go instead of having to deliberately click planets, but here's my screencast, complete with Star Trekky voiceover:

Fun!

Oh my gosh, this looks trippy - I'm going to try it shortly. I like different ways of visualizing visuals (ha!), and two of my other faves happen to be:
and this very popular Firefox add-on:
I'm still looking for an elegant way to simply show Flickr images (based on certain search criteria) in blocks similar to popurls on a single page, tho - anyone have any pointers?
Very cool that the screencast vid for this was posted on Flickr video; now I have an urge to do one myself.

While this is an incredibly cool visualization, I have to agree with L0neRanger that it really isn't all that useful. For me it would just be another navigation barrier

@L0neRanger: must disagree with you friendo. Mashups (even though this is one in the most liberal sense) are valuable because people read and interpret information differently. When you scroll down a list of flickr photos, you might be gaining some knowledge about the person who took them, etc. But someone else might just see a column a pictures, without picking up on the contextual stuff. This is a way of looking at pictures in a different way that might also provide contextual info.

Why would anyone want to view flickr images in space? Its not like we are viewing images of space or the stars.
Its lame.
