New York Times Reader Now Available for Mac

Windows and now Mac OS X only: The beta NY Times reader application which Adam gave the full screenshot walk-through treatment is now available for your Mac. The application definitely provides a better reading experience than the web site only; there are fewer ads, more ways to customise the page's layout (headlines only, headlines with excerpts, different photo sizes), and it helpfully grays out articles you've already read. (Click the image to see a full-size screenshot, where the American Idol article I read is grayed out.) The NY Times beta reader is a free download, and it requires (ugh) Silverlight to run on your Mac, as well as login details to NYTimes.com (free registration).

"font rendering on the Mac is one of the nicest technologies in OSX". Hmm... I don't get it why a blurry looking font (the way Mac fonts look comparing to the PC) is "nicest". Why would one want to sacrifice his eyesight for the sake of fonts looking closer to print?
Speaking of NY Times reader though, I think the Web browser is a great free reader.

I think it's absolutely disgusting. The font rendering makes my eyes bleed... after all, font rendering on the Mac is one of the nicest technologies in OSX. It's probably a problem with Silverlight, though.

Just read this and thought to give it a try on my windows PC, but found out that this reader isn't really free. And the link to the beta only leads you to their purchase page.
This explains why the reader has fewer ads than the online version.

What is wrong with silverlight? I for one hope many things move in that direction. I'm done with flash. Plus Dreamspark gives me nice free tools to work with.

If a site has to have a special reader for users to find it more navigable then something's wrong with their business plan.

Thanks phatpat, are you using Leopard? I have a Macbook running 10.5.2 and I can't change the window size. It's pretty annoying...
@wmarcy, would you mind posting some links to NYT articles (not editorials) that you feel are left-wing or America hating?

This program is horrible, I tried to install it on my MacBook Pro and halfway through it tells me it needs the installation CD named "homedirectory". Crapware IMHO...

I'll pass. I lost all respect for the Times years ago. And the need to install Silverlight makes anything like this a non-starter.

$14.95/month? Wow. I'll stick with my RSS reader. It looks like an interesting piece of software though.

Can anyone confirm that they're able to resize the reader window on a MacBook?

The NY Times beta reader is a free download
Sure, so is Microsoft Office but they will both cost you in the end.
How much does it cost?
Times Reader will be available for purchase as an annual or monthly subscription. The monthly subscription is $14.95 per month and automatically renews each month. The annual subscription is $169 per year and automatically renews each year. [www.nytimes.com]
Not really the lifehack I need!

I don't feel at ease installing Silverlight... Maybe it is the anti-MS Fud... Maybe I have learned to live without them... Maybe it's the thought of thinking of yet another product copied by MS... I'll give it a try... but I hope I don't regret it.

Check the fine print: Free trial for the first 30 days, then $14.95/month after that. [firstlook.nytimes.com]
I'll just stick with my browser and [www.nytimes.com] .

I'm done with applications that need a specific version for different OSes. Just use AIR and be done with it.

dude, those mormon polygamy babes are kind of, well... steamy!
next lifehacker article needs to be related to that downright incredible hairdo they all seem to be rockin.
oh yeah the reader looks useful. Network World had something similar but I couldn't stand it running in the systray anymore, somehow it always ended up getting snipered when any unresponsive app was slowing down XP.

"(ugh) Silverlight"? Explain please; is Flash automatically referred to as "(ugh) Flash"? Is there a particular reason you dislike Silverlight, or is it just the usual knee jerk anti-MS FUD?

Looks like a skimpy version of the browser view. Is there additional content or something? I see no purpose to an additional reader.

@dan: Resizing totally works--it's interesting though, it's predefined sizes, 4 or so.
First Look is up for me, but here's the direct download link:

Is there no way to make the window larger? Or smaller, for that matter I guess. Re-sizing of any kind would be nice.
