Layers Tutorial for Photoshop Beginners
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 7:40 AM on May 23, 2008
The Digital Photography School blog has an instructive tutorial on using layers for those just getting their feet wet inside Photoshop, or other high-end image editors like the open-source GIMP. Those jumping in will learn how to make transparent layers, use masked layers to roll back effects, and duplicate layers for sharpening and other effects. Hit the link for a quick schooling, including links to related lessons, or offer up your own tutorials and advice in the comments.

99% of people shouldn't use Photoshop. It's a professional tool not meant for the everyday person.

@jammadave: Poetically speaking, you were right the first time. :)
As for The Gimp, I find it a very Zen experience to read how one does something in Photoshop and recreate the experience in The Gimp. I've yet to meet a tip I can't recreate with a little research.

It seems like a short tutorial, but gets the very basics down well. As a PS CS2 user, I know how essential layers are, and encourage all the beginning users to learn them well.

Annnnnnnnd this is why I still don't use photoshop. I am an artist, see, with my actual hands... and when it comes to digital imagine manipulation, everything beyond what MS Photo Editor was capable of (back in Office 2000) is complete gibberish for me to read. =0(
I'm a smart guy (promise!), but in cases like this I apparently need a tutorial written for a third-grader.

Considering the cost of Photoshop, could we have more GIMP tutorials? Thanks. Great site.

I kid, I kid (kinda sorta). check out lynda if you're serious about learning applications. Some of them are free (or have been in the past). They are really comprehensive and have helped me before
