Google Docs Adds Fixed-Width Page View
Posted by Gina Trapani at 8:05 AM on May 23, 2008
Google Docs adds a new choice to the document editor's View menu: Fixed-width Page View. While not quite true-to-life Print Preview (which is difficult to achieve in-browser), it's as close to a true representation of the printed page as an online office suite's gotten so far. [via] Update: I stand corrected: Zoho Writer offers a Page View that includes breaks and page numbers, unlike Google Docs.

Peter : Zoho Start ([start.zoho.com]) provides a way to arrange your documents under folders. We are enhancing the current model to include 'multiple file choose & move to folder' option.

What about [www.thinkfree.com] which has a free online word processing (as well as spreadsheets and presentations) service and a free desktop syncing solution. It's UI is similar to older versions of MS Office and has full page views. It can support the Office 2007 formats. You can manage your documents in folders too!
I've also been able to use the Thinkfree Manager to automatically backup my data as I work. I simply open existing documents, spreadsheets, or presentations from the locally installed Thinkfree Manager. As I work, TF Manager periodically syncs my online account to its corresponding local folders - my work files are thus backed-up automatically without even thinking about it (Thinkfree ;-) ). This isn't the tidiest solution - TF Manager also tries to sync temporary files which sometimes causes errors (*****.*** was not synced properly, etc.) but this backup method has been quite sufficient for my purposes. One of the best things about this system is that I don't have to use the Thinkfree Office Suite to edit my documents - the documents are backed up, whether I opt to use Thinkfree Office, MS Office 2007, OpenOffice.Org 2.4, or whatever other Office Suite I've set as default to open Office documents - so long as I open the documents from Thinkfree Manager (or from the local Thinkfree Account Folders).
All-in-all I've been quite happy, now I am easily able to sync my Work files with my home computer while being able to have the peace of mind of knowing that if worse would come to worse, I have existing back ups of all of the important files online. :-)
Has anybody else used this, care to share your thoughts on it? :)

One of the few features that Google Docs has that Zoho desperately need (or I desperately need Zoho to have it) is the ability to sort your documents in folders. The tagging feature just isn't enough.

When I filled out an official Google survey about Docs, I listed this as my biggest complaint as far as missing features. When I try to write papers for school on gDocs (mainly because I know I'll be away from my laptop, but will have an opportunity to write), the biggest problem is dealing with a page requirement. If I have a paper I'm writing that needs to be 6 pages long, I have to switch to another word processor in order to check. I'm glad this has finally been implemented.

I use gDocs more than Buzzword, but Buzzword is a FAR superior editor to gDocs. It had true-to-life print view, page numbers, and way better image support.

WOW!
I'm kind of surprised at how badly I've wanted this but ... YES, HOORAY!!!
However, I agree with the above ... Gdocs, I think, still lacks a lot of the features of Zoho. Too bad.
Now, if someone could make an online version of SCRIVENER (mac app) that I could scriven with at home and work, that would be frickin awesome.

This is lovely. An old format has been bugging me for a while. Thanks

Finally! Gdocs is really quite good for probably 90% of my word processing needs.

Google Docs... always the bridesmaid, never the bride. I have a mixed relationship with GDocs. Zoho managed to run in circles around GDocs, while GDocs sits comfortably, knowing that people will love it and won't seek out Zoho.
Oh, how I wish Google can dance with me like OpenOffice.org does. Oh how I wish it can speak to me like Zoho...
... oh well... I'll dance with GDocs anywayz.

Excellent, I have been begging for them to implement something like this for some time. Now if we can only get GDocs to follow Zoho and include page numbers.
