Desktop Teleporter Keeps Your Desktop Clean
Posted by Adam Pash at 6:50 AM on May 23, 2008
Windows only: Donationware application Desktop Teleporter automatically moves files and folders from your desktop to user-defined folders to keep your desktop clean and neat. Desktop Teleporter is serious about keeping your desktop clean, moving any file that you don't add to the exclude list. If you want more advanced options and support beyond the desktop, check out Lifehacker's very own Belvedere. If all you want is a clean desktop and don't need more advanced options, Desktop Teleporter looks like a winner.

@infmom: That's pretty good advice if I do say so myself. Simple, and to the point.

@infmom: Well, obviously, but with these tools it make it simple just to dump them there without having to think about it. Simpler, quicker, less to think about.

Don't save stuff to the desktop to begin with and you won't need extra software (or time) to clean up after yourself.

For windows there is ClutterKiller. Much more polished then this. Not sure about Linux, but I think Clutterkiller might also be available for Mac

Is there an equivalent for Linux users? I use Xandros/KDE and Ubuntu/Gnome distros.

There is a much more polished program called ClutterKiller that cleans and organizes your desktop, and has some other cool functions like an isolator, that blacks out wallpaper, other windows and icons. Check it out at www.DataGoRound.com/ClutterKiller

For Mac users, Hazel is an excellent tool to do the same.

@jeromy: Yeah, Downloads is more crowded than the Desktop. Whereas the Desktop was the drop spot of the older OS's I've dropped everything and downloaded everythign into downloads.
Differentiating from Renders and Personal Pictures is nice...

For Mac users, this can be done fairly easily with Automator. (Or Applescript, but I'm not a coder...) I have a pretty nifty Workflow that sorts all my Desktop items into the proper folders once a week using iCal. If you have any questions, drop me a line here or on my blog.
Cheers,
Daniel

@what the Ph15h?: I second that. Belvedere is always running. I use it to organize my downloads. :)

I love Belvedere but I would really like to have the ability to say something like "delete the files in the Recycle Bin that are two weeks old" so i could still have the files in there but when they are too old, it's good bye for them.
