HamachiX Updated with Leopard Support
Mac OS X Leopard only: Our favourite free virtual private network client for the Mac, HamachiX, has been updated (finally!) to work with Leopard. HamachiX is a graphical front end to the Windows Hamachi product, and essentially it lets you access your Mac remotely over the internet as if it were on the local network. That means you can listen to shared iTunes libraries, remote control your Mac, and access file shares as well. HamachiX isn't as easy to use or quite as stable as the Windows version, but it lets you network with PCs running the client as well. Here's how to create your own virtual private network with Hamachi.

I second a step-by-step multiplatform guide to OpenVPN. J

for remote support cross platforms, you might want to check out some other really well working product:
www.teamviewer.com
works across firewalls as well as on PC and MacOSX.
You should give it a try. No info on spyware etc. though...

there's been a bit of a war over this at the hamachi forums: [forums.hamachi.cc] basically when Hamachi got acquired by logmein, they all but abandoned the osx client, stating that it wasn't in their interests to support a platform most people weren't using. Right now it seems they've contracted someone to write a 3rd-party interface for macs, but to be honest i won't be renewing my premium license because the support has been so shoddy on this front. It's a real shame because there isn't really any simple to use cross platform alternative.

been wanting to try this out for quite some time.

After switching from Tiger to Leopard and losing HamachiX support, I removed everything and downloaded the Hamachi package from the LogMeIn website.
Following the instructions to get tuncfg and hamachi installed was a breeze, and now it's a simple matter of 2 Terminal commands to get Hamachi up and running.
I don't see any advantage to using HamachiX over the base package.

I use logmein.com's free service and it works great with both my Mac and Windows desktops.

@max.goedjen: Yeah, I agree. I also don't like the CLI version because I fear of messing things up if I ever need to uninstall some of the files and dir's associated with it.
I'm just holding out for a stable release of HamachiX, hopefully it won't be too long.

cute.
Hamachi is the Japanese word for Yellowtail (Fish)

@CyberChaos:
Agreed. My Mac Mini with Leopard has been running it perfectly. As well as all of the programs I got from life hacker.. It might be a good idea to update those programs though..

I've been using HamachiX 0.9 1C3 (previous version) on Leopard without any problems.

HamachiX was the reason I switched to the CLI; whenever I launched it, it would basically freeze OS X in it's entirety. Dunno if this has been fixed yet, but in all actuality, the CLI is really much simpler/pleasant to use, if you can get it installed.

Sweet, I love hamachi. Will definitely give it a try later tonight

That'd be great if, say hamachi itself was updated. It's only been 2 years.

@Brett: I doubt it'll be any faster. HamachiX is just a pretty GUI that invokes the command line client that was last updated over a year ago.
The command line client is what's doing all the tunneling work, and it has yet to be ported to Intel. Pretty sad, really.
Lifehacker: A step-by-step guide to setting up OpenVPN would be awesome! (Especially if it had Linux/OS X/Windows instructions for multi-platform bridging action!)

Is this new version any better on resources? The previous version would slow my computer to a horrible crawl.

Finally!
I need an easy way to help out my grandparents from college when they need help with their iMac.
If this works easily it seems like it will be the solution.
