Thunderbird 3 Gets Tabs
Posted by Adam Pash at 6:40 AM on May 15, 2008
The first alpha release Thunderbird 3 (for extremely early adopters) is now available, and it's got tabs! T-bird 3 can open several messages in tabs rather than popping new windows—great news for your clean desktop.

I could see tabs being useful if I wanted to have, say, a mailbox tab, a lightning tab, and an IM tab. Something like that.
Either way, good to have some evidence that somebody is still working on T-bird...

Hmm, I guess it's nice to have, but I don't get the tabs thing. I haven't double-clicked on a message since 1998. Preview pane FTW!

It seems to be mainly just a transfer to Gecko 1.9. The name 'shredder' makes me laugh.
Tabs and improved javascript don't mean much to me in an email client. Maybe I'll find a use for the tabs, but I'm not seeing it. F8 & F9 suit me just fine.
Now, if I were choosing features (and maybe these will come later), I'd pick newsgroup handling (multipart yenc, collapsible subthreads, built-in plonking, etc.) and RSS handling (favicons, better handling of broken feeds, better duplicate detection, etc.) improvements before anything else.

I'm just happy to see the project hasn't died.

Thunderbird's main fault for me has been the poor junk mail handling, both in terms of its ability to spot junk, and in the haphazard way it deals with it. Sometimes it even manages to flag something as junk but 'forgets' to move it to the junk folder. Very annoying.

Not really on topic, but I am being blind or does the Mozilla Messaging site really not have an RSS feed?
