XBMC for OS X 0.5 Beta 2 Chock Full o' Fixes
Posted by Gina Trapani at 6:55 AM on May 14, 2008
The busy folks working on XBMC for OS X just dropped beta 2, which fixes several bugs I listed in yesterday's feature story, XBMC Turns Your Mac into the Ultimate Media Center. Most notably, scripts and live weather forecasts now work.

Will xmbc automount .iso files (DVD rips)?

@bigb0b: It should. I play iso's all the time on my Xbox. I tested it out on the Linux port and the iso files worked there too.

Playing .iso files is one of the biggest selling points of XBMC over other media clients, so I bet the support is there. I have not experimented with XBMC for OS X yet, as I am waiting to see if the Linux port catches up -- in 6-8 months, I think I will take the plunge and go one way or the other.

@jkrell: I haven't used the OSX version either (I have no mac). But, the Linux version works well for me--I've had less problems in Linux than on the XBox. Try the LiveXBMC build of the linux port. It provides a good test for basic use and runs from a USB stick. [xbmc.org] I think the Mac version is probably easier to setup, but the linux version was cheaper since I already had a good spare computer ready to roll.

@takemetoyourtoaster: Once you download the skin, extract and upload it to /xbmc/skins. You then just have to go to the settings menu, select appearance, and then select the skin of your choice. Once you select the skin it should be your default until you change it to something else in the settings.

@jonny6pak: Cool, I will try the LiveXBMC build that you pointed me toward. I have a spare machine with Ubuntu 8.04 loaded on it, so I will give it a whirl.

@jonny6pak: Cool, I'll give the live USB stick thing a try. I was not aware they had done that.
