iTunesVolume Displays Album Artwork, Controls iTunes
Posted by Adam Pash at 6:45 AM on May 14, 2008
Mac OS X only: Freeware application iTunesVolume is an attractive iTunes controller for your Mac desktop. Like many before it, iTunesVolume offers playback control and displays album artwork (and it looks great doing it), but iTunesVolume sets itself apart with a very simple always-on-top control: a volume slider. Through this simple slider, you can access and control everything else the app does, which is virtually everything you can do in iTunes. iTunesVolume takes a little time to wrap your head around, but once you do, it offers a really nice way to interact with your music. iTunesVolume is freeware, Mac OS X only.

Also, other features that I forgot to mention that set this app apart are a sleep timer and a "Play Only This Track" feature, both of which are nice when you're nodding off or heading out the door and just can't take ending the music.

"Yes, still mad at TotalTunes."
@dan: Agreed, that was a bummer. Sorry about that.

This is tidy enough, but am I the only one who finds iTunes' own "MiniPlayer" mode to be more than small enough?
I mean.. FFWD/RWD/Play/Pause/Volume all in a tiny little package that still allows full access to your library.. what's not to like?
For those who don't know: you can 'enable' MiniPlayer mode by pressing the Green window control to shrink the iTunes window. Then just tweak the window-size control just a tad to the left, and it'll shrink even further. This preference is remembered until you decide you no longer want it, so you can flip between library view and miniplayer by hitting the green button.

How long until it goes shareware after getting the Lifehacker bump?
Yes, still mad at TotalTunes. What garbage.

@BingleyJoe: Where is this green window you speak of? Currently I'm using You Control Tunes - [www.yousoftware.com] However I would much rather have the iTunes built in feature that you speak of.

This probably wouldn't be needed if iTunes weren't such a bloated application.

@technotica: He's talking about the little green dot with the plus sign next to the red and yellow dots in the upper left corner. If you use You Control Tunes you probably won't want the miniplayer. I use quicksilver to control everything and I have You Control Tunes if I want to find something in my library or change playlists quickly. You can also get a widget called synchronize that lets you type in the title or artist and it will play it.

Beautiful App.
I'm a sucker for eye candy and the Core Animation album art changer immediately got my attention.
But like Mordy said... how in the world do you kill this thing? Activity Monitor/Terminal is really not an appropriete answer...
Also on a side note... does that silder really have to be there? I mean I know that that's the sell of this app, but why couldnt this just be another button on the taskbar or better yet, not even exist? maybe it's just me but I have nothing on my desktop so it's kinda hard to find a good place for the slider that doesn't look awkward.
Awsome application for aesthetics purposes though. Thanks LH.

Is there something similar for the Vista sidebar?

Sorry for the double post.
To kill the app, click and hold the slider and a menu should pop up.

@Alicemagic: That does work, but you can also just right-click the slider itself to bring up that menu (and not have to hold down the mouse button while you navigate it).
Like I said, it takes a little getting used to. :)

I can do everything I need in Itunes with Quicksilver triggers. This just gets in the way while doing other stuff.
