FuelFrog Tracks Mileage from Twitter Posts
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 6:00 AM on May 14, 2008
US-centric - Free fuel-tracking service FuelFrog provides a service you could technically do yourself, but it's a lot more convenient than keeping a paper journal and doing monthly division work. Whenever you fill up your car, you can Twitter FuelFrog with your miles since the last fill-up, price per gallon, and gallons pumped, and your data will be graphed and tracked to show you how many miles per gallon you're getting. It can serve as visual reinforcement to start driving for fuel efficiency, or just a confirmation of your car's real-world mileage.

I've been using a similar service for awhile now. It's My MileMarker. It uses Twitter as well. You do the same as this one, text your mileage, gallons, and price per gallon and it texts you back your miles per gallon. My MileMarker is able to track several vehicles. When you send the text, it will determine which vehicle the mileage is for and automatically save it for that vehicle.
It's nice. I use it for my car and my motorcycle.

Is it just me or is everything starting to revolve around twitter? I haven't gotten into it (yet??) but the abundance of twitter crap is amazing!
And just think here I have been calculating MPG on a spreadsheet on my WinMo device. Think of all the time I have been wasting...
Oh wait :)

Would be great if it could do kilometers per litre, but I'm not about to do the math to convert that to miles per gallon.

@saffyre9: "1 mile per gallon = 0.425143707 kilometers per liter" (Thank you, Google).
So just multiply by about 0.4
I've used a little Palm app for this (jMileage) at every fill up for the 5 years I've had my car.

I, too, use MyMileMarker via twitter. Works very well.

Maybe I'm just an old fuddy-duddy who isn't hip to twittering the whole Interwebs Two experience and all, but how freaking hard is it to divide the number of miles on your trip odometer by the number of gallons you just pumped?
Even my crappy old Corolla has a trip odometer. Two, even. Jeez.

I was sort of hoping for a native iphone app that would do this...
Any ideas?

@Tyson0016:
There are currently two iPhone apps that natively keep track of your MPG. One is by iApp-a-Day called Pumped and the other is called MPG. I haven't really tried them since I use MyMileMarker, but both should be pretty good.

I use an Excel sheet but this is cool for "on-the-go", except for the fact they've left out the metric countries.
We want Litres and Kilometres!

@black_rabbit: I think the point is to have a running chart of what you've been doing. Which could be done on a spreadsheet, but this way you can just send the data from your average cell phone and it's automatically done for you.
