Best RSS Newsreader?
Posted by Adam Pash at 9:00 AM on May 14, 2008
If you spend any amount of time on the web, you're doing yourself a disservice if you haven't found a decent RSS newsreader to keep on top of your favourite web sites. If you aren't using one, it's time you start; if you are, the question remains: Are you using the best newsreader for your needs (and feeds)? So for this week's Hive Five, we want you to tell us all about your favourite RSS newsreader. Hit the jump for more details and to nominate your favourite newsreader—be it web- or desktop-based—in the comments.
The first round of the Hive Five voting takes place in the comments, where you nominate your favourite tool for the job. We get hundreds of comments, so to make your nomination clear, please include it at the top of your comment like so: VOTE: Newsreader Goes Here. If you don't follow this format, your vote may not be counted. After you've made your nomination, let us know what makes it stand out from the competition.
About the Hive Five: Our new feature series, the Hive Five, asks readers to answer the most frequently asked question we get—"Which tool is the best?" Once a week we'll put out a call for contenders looking for the best solution to a certain problem, then YOU tell us your favourite tools to get a job done. Every Thursday, we'll report back with the top five recommendations and give you a chance to vote on which is best. For an example, check out last week's Best Online File Sharing Services.

I also like to be able to sign in on any computer, like when I'm on lunch at work I can check out all my favourite feeds.

Google Reader. I have tried a few Windows and Linux desktop-based readers, but the ubiquity and user interface of Reader keeps bringing me back. Starred items and quick response times are a big plus, too.
My only criticism of G-Reader is the lack of support for feed authentication.

VOTE: FeedDemon. I've tried Google Reader, and I like a lot of its features, but the dealbreaker is that Reader doesn't allow me to easily post to my blog from within its system. Yes, I can "share" my items, but that isn't really needed. The Demon does all of that and more: it allows me to post to my blog editor of choice (Windows Live Writer, natch, I can easily read items offline, and if I'm on a work computer I can check my feeds at NewsGator. And now that the software is free, I don't see why more aren't using it.

I'm not sure how it's going to fare once Firefox goes to 3.0 (a real concern for me), but it's my favorite thing around.
It's very easy to use, and I like staying in my browser (especially because I'll frequently bookmark feed items or add them to Scrapbook - another favorite add-on).

Have tried Pageflakes, Netvibes, FeedDemon and a number of other desktop readers and I always go back to Google Reader. I was using FeedDemon this whole last month anD then went back to Google Reader and it just felt a lot better. The browser in FeedDemon is slow and somtimes pages don't load right so I would end up doing a lot of copy/paste type activity to get the address over to Firefox just to read something. I got used to it but it was kind of a pain. Google Reader is pretty ugly in my opinion, but thats Google Apps for ya.
Stylish with the Sweetface Skin is a nice change to the look of Google Reader and much easier on the eyes.

For online use, Google Reader ain't bad and it integrates nicely with Firefox. The iPod-friendly version of GR comes in handy when I get bored while walking on the hampster wheel. And, having Outlook subscribe to your own shared/starred items feed is a great way to fetch articles for offline reading (if you're already bound to Outlook for other reasons).

VOTE: NewsGator both web and NetNewsWire desktop client for Mac (as a set, that's imperative)
I used google reader for a long time because it's annoying for me to be at home, read some of my news, then go to work, hit a break and have to filter through everything I already read in whatever news reader I was using there. The problem though, with google reader, was that it's online only. There was never a good notification tool for new entries, and I generally dislike web based clients for anything of this nature. I found out that net news wire synchronized with newsgator recently and jumped the google reader ship for that alone. Since then I've been pleased having both local flags and shared clippings features, as well as a simple send-to-blog feature.
There are numerous other useful facts about NetNewsWire, such as embedded tabbed browsers for centralized rss related reading without compromise. I like that it does a great job at keeping the favicon from each site in the sidebar. It has good integration with iTunes for the sake of enclosures. This is especially important for feeds that have audio or video enclosures either always or sometimes, but always have some associated post as well.
Plus I love the unread count badge on the dock icon just like Mail, the only thing that could make this better is if it was PART of Mail.app. It's a shame that the rss features added in Mail are not properly synchronized through the .Mac IMAP server or I'd probably be using that instead...
