Surf Canyon Browser Extension Deepens Search Results
Posted by Gina Trapani at 7:35 AM on May 13, 2008

Firefox and Internet Explorer only: The Surf Canyon browser extension embeds extra search results at Google, Yahoo, and MSN. With Surf Canyon installed, search the web with your favourite engine as usual. A bull's-eye icon will appear next to results—click it to expand another level of links related to the single result. My test for a "lifehacker" Google search was promising: Surf Canyon included links to the official Lifehacker book, Upgrade Your Life, and a life hacks site search engine at Google Coop. Surf Canyon is a free download, and it's available as both a Firefox extension and IE add-on.

Did anyone else read this as "smurf" canyon? I though it was another browser game like PMOG.

Sucks that it doesn't work in FF v3 which is what the majority of us Ubuntu users are on now.

The latest version, available at www.SurfCanyon.com, works with FF v3. We'll be updating the version on Mozilla shortly.
Thank you, Gina, for the post!

It won't work for me. Firefox does not show the bullseye. IE shows the bullseye but does nothing. Maxthon does not show the bullseye. There is nothing on the webpage or in the install process to indicate "something special" needs to be done. Wazzup?

Sounds like a wonderful extension, however the description is misleading. It does not give you links deeper on the site, but link on the site that usually are advertisements. I'll pass, thanks.

@yochanan_marqos - The "recommendations" are links that are coming from deeper in the search result set. As you can see in the screen shot above "Lifehacker Search Engine" comes "from page 3". That would be page 3 of the original search result set.
You can think of it as an automated way to dig out relevant results that might otherwise have remained buried.
They are not advertisements. Thanks!

I've been trying out Surf Canyon for a possible review in my utilities blog, but frankly I am not impressed with it. The deeper results it dredges up often are duplicates or near-duplicates of top-level results. And I find the sudden appearance of additional links unnerving, especially as their indent sometimes slides my entire page a bit to the side. Anyone who is intrigued should go ahead and try Surf Canyon, but I'm currently inclined to pass on it. Very sorry, Mark Cramer, especially after your compliments about my blog.

I have been using Surf Canyon since February when I read about it on Techcrunch and it's been great, has made my search experience much quicker, can't imagine searching without it. In fact when I recently did a search on a friend's computer, I was confused for a minute as to why there was no bulls-eye.....

I use Surf Canyon with Mozilla without any problems. I honestly find that it improves my searches, making them much faster. Very cool how it helps me drill down on results. Excellent utility for search

After installing this plug-in, I find that it offers a great way to explore search result without going from page to page. Everything is done within the same page, and you might just find some interesting related search link when you explore on the search result further. Yes, Surf Canyon generate its own set of high quality search result to complement those of the major search engines.
No user interface is perfect but this truly offers a convenient and innovative ways of viewing results without replacing the powerful search engine we love.
surf Canyon is a epitome of search engine innovation that shows how combiniation of usability and excellent search result can enhance the search experience.
