Turn Gmail in an Always-On Baby Book

Blogger Rafe Needleman uses Gmail to record memories of his young son's life. With the hefty storage, easy accessibility and robust filter and search tools, it's a neat way to be able to quickly pull up that time when your little one met Santa Claus—or yanked your laptop off the table. Of course, with stuff this precious, it's always a good idea to back it up.

GMail is the only E-Mail Tool im using nowadays as its the only one that isnt flooded by SPAM. Backing up the whole thing is a good idea tho i guess.

Google calendar works for this, too.

Umm... isn't that what blogger is for? ;) You can even Email your posts to blogger... which makes it just as convenient.
Since the birth of my first son two years ago I have used blogger to post stories, pictures, and videos to my blog!
Of course, I backup all of my precious photos to a portable hard drive and my Flickr Pro account. For video I recently discovered Vimeo for hosting HiDef video from my fancy-pants new HD camcorder.

This makes me wish Gmail had a time band like EverNote, which is handy for looking at sorted events chronologically. For this purpose, it seems to make more sense to use an offline tool to begin with like EverNote - just a keystroke and start typing in memories of your young's first [INSERT EXPERIENCE HERE] and it's easy to navigate and tag, too.

Yeah, I thought this was what 99.98% of all mommy blogs were: baby books.
Using e-mail as a journal might have made sense in the early Nineties, but it doesn't really make a lot of sense today since there are a ton of other more appropriate tools.

I set up a gmail account for my daughter when she was born (1/3/2008) and occasionally I'll just shoot her emails about different things: milestones she just achieved, pictures of stuff we did together, YouTube videos I posted of her, etc.... I plan on giving her the gmail account when she is old enough and she'll have this archive of thoughts and events from her old man.

Hmmm... I am not so sure about using GMail to a sort of diary of events. Like some posters have mentioned, I think that a blog is a much better alternative.
Also, you can password protect your blog so that no one can see your personal stuff, and quickly and easily send posts to your blog by using Microsoft Office Word.
Or, you can simply keep a diary in a text document, word document, whatever. You can set up hyperlinks that jump to specific parts of your "posts".
(i.e, "February 6, 2008" jumps to the appropriate "post" in your word document)
But this is something to think about, non the less... just don't forget to use a super duper password with a good combination of alphanumeric characters and special characters!
I'm sure that no one wants to have their info stolen by anyone-- -that just plain sucks.

@jeffk: this is exactly what I do. i have a calendar named after my child and then I can share it w/ my wife or other family.
a blog is too high stress at times. I mean, i'm busy, and I want to note it without having to make it seem nicely written and interesting... but if you have the time, I'm all for blogging it instead of course.

@bjhanifin,
I agree. No baby here, but I use Twitter to post brief notes about what I did during a day as a sort of historical archive. I'm considering switching to Tumblr, because you have to get a little creative with text with only 140 characters available at Twitter... I don't have the energy/discipline to maintain a blog, but Twitter's easy; it's like an online notepad...

I love this idea, and actually set something similar up recently. I do have a blog that I post to frequently, but there are times that I want to remember something that wouldn't necessarily interest anyone besides my husband and me. I use this account throughout the day to send little "Sara just did the funniest thing..." comments from my mobile.
My version is actually a slight twist on this. I set up account for each of my children, but send all memorable messages to a main account that forwards to the appropriate account based on the content, thanks to Gmail's great filters. That way, everything is in one place, but can be easily accessed by person also (or downloaded via pop later on). Oh, and like I said, I have a blog too, which I have set to automatically forward to this Gmail account whenever I post, so everything is really in one place.
