YouTube Comment Snob Filters Stupid Comments
Posted by Adam Pash at 4:00 AM on May 10, 2008
Firefox only (Windows/Mac/Linux): Firefox extension YouTube Comment Snob filters comments on YouTube videos that don't meet your snobbish standards. It does so using a combination of criteria, like a user-defined threshold of spelling errors (using Firefox's spell-checker), excessive punctuation, and excessive capitalisation. You can enable or disable any of the filter options if you don't mind capital letters, for example, and you can view any hidden comment by simply clicking Show. It's a pretty saucy little extension, but now it's hard not to want a full-on Internet Comment Snob.

There are just soo many places in my life a filter like this could come in handy!
But really, aren't stupid comments most of the entertainment factor?

Ah, seems open source has come to the rescue already :) (or is on the way, at least)

Maybe YouTube needs to force people to type properly. "We're sorry, but your comment could not be submitted. Please type in proper grammar and punctuation. Coherence in your comment is optional, but will increase the chances of your comment being approved by our automated systems. Any offensive comments will not be approved"

"i need something like this for the internet in general."
@glass: XD
I don't need this, since Greasemonkey disables comments for me =)
Whoever can write a greasemonkey script that meets glass' needs (with at least 2 years of support and updates), gets an automatic $50 donation from me.

Welcome to Web 2.1. A Stupid Internet Made By Stupid People (tm)
Ah how I miss the days before Endless September. [en.wikipedia.org]
I think if Youtube instituted an IQ test before posting comments, it could filter out 85% of those posts on its own.
Sample Test #1: 1+2= a) 3 b)12 c) Google
Sample Test #2: Which is correct? a) Good b) Gud c) Cancel My Internet Account
Sample Test #3: Who is buried in Grant's Tomb?

Looks nice. Unfortunately, it would only result in extra clicks for me. I'd have the same problems I have on Digg, with buried comments, I can't help but show them just to see what they said...

@kureshii: That needs to be built into a FF plug-in now! I'd love to have a little box over comments on any page that simply reads: "This comment is most likely stupid. Click to see comment."

Who reads comments on YouTube? Seriously? :)

I mostly already love it. NOTE: it doesn't work on the "Next" screen of comments. You'll have to refresh the screen (for example, Page 2 of 135 pages of comments) to get this filter to kick in.

Amazing plugin and concept, but it slows YouTube to a crawl as it sifts through the page. Once they speed it up, I will add it.

Great comments, folks! Funniest thing I have read in ages.
I am reminded of the quote: "We've all heard that a million monkeys banging on a million typewriters will eventually reproduce the entire works of Shakespeare. Now, thanks to the Internet, we know this is not true." - Robert Wilensky

I applaud whoever developed this extension, but wouldn't an extension to turn off YouTube comments have the exact same effect with a lot less effort?

I would say it, but all of you beat me to it. I don't think there are any comments at YouTube worth reading in the first place, are there?
Either that or there'll be a lot of empty comment fields after videos once I have this installed.

I only ever read the comments on YouTube if I'm extremely bored. There's always a laugh to be had and/or an argument to be picked somewhere...

@Darklighter: I loved that xkcd.
And I have to admit, I read the comments on youtube for comic relief. Besides, just when I think that humanity cant get any worse, I go there and it helps me realize I'm deluded and in denial about the human race surviving.

@Lazarus: If you're feeling down and out, paying a quick visit there lets you know that at least you're better than half the internet population... or are you?

I tried it and it unfortunately crashed when I clicked on a featured video. (Where 95% of the worst offenders are located)
Maybe because it crashed due to massive stupidty.
Not ALL You Tube Comments are bad. I'm a vlogger (the 1% on the site who actually shows their face) and make sure to give coherent thoughts.

I like how terse and to-the-point this post's subject is, but... I hope this add-on gets a name-change, because "snob" isn't accurate: snobbery involves cruelty, contempt, and a type of stupidity unto itself due to a narrow worldview. Rather, filtering out stupid comments is a smart, happy thing to do.
I suggest "YouTube Comment Qualitizer" (portmanteau for quality + optimizer) instead. =)
