Track Your Domino's Pizza Order from a Terminal
US-centric: Now you can truly see why our commenters dubbed Python the programming language that "can do anything." One intrepid (and hungry) hacker, possibly named Nick Jensen, put together a small script that tracks Domino's Pizza orders from phone call to doorbell ring. Download and launch the script (with instructions at the link), plug in your phone number, and you don't have to get up until that cheese-covered saucer is at the door. It's just another true sign of how life-changing the command line can really be. Thanks, HowToGeek!

I agree that Python is a handy language and this is a really cute script, but let's not get crazy here; all this script does is fetch a URL and parse the results which you can do pretty easily in any language.

@AskTheAdmin: I have to agree with you statement. I couldn't even remember the last time I had Pizza.
BTW, If I am really hungry, why would I want to waste the little amount of energy left in me to crunch status updat e on my pc just so I can geek up my hunger more? I don't think so......I think the Nick python master/guru could cook this up for Dominos for a web interface product...where impatient customers can just try their orders..

For added anti-social goodness, there's also the Pizza party app which lets you order from the command line.

Truly geeky and awesome.
I'm no big fan of Domino's, but I smell a thin-crust pizza in my future tonight just so I can try this script out.
Gotta admit that Domino's isn't my favorite pizza. Any chance of seeing a script like this for Papa John's? Or even Pizza Hut? I'd ask for Round Table first, but they don't even do online ordering...

Am I missing something? Dominos has a real-time pizza order tracker on their website:

Yeah, thanks, but i'll just stick to submitting the order and leaving the status page open since it goes there automatically.
also it's kind of weird how all the employee names are followed by a number, like they're robots: "Marc 25 has put your pizza in the oven."

@yanni85: Not the case, really. When Tom Monaghan, Domino's founder, was involved, yes, he helped fund pro-life groups such as Operation Rescue and Right to Life. Domino's itself, the corporation, never did, but via his paycheck, yes, pizza sales did end up going towards that. However, Monaghan sold his empire to Bain Capital in 1998 for $1 billion, so no money from Domino's Pizza sales is going into Monaghan's pocket and thus via him into pro-life groups any longer.

That's pretty sweet. Now if it only worked for a pizza joint that I'd actually eat from, it'd be perfect!

@HeartBurnKid: Yeah, if Python's so great, you'd think it could get status updates from a company that doesn't even have an online presence... ;-)

Wow - even Neil Stephenson's "Snow Crash" didn't figure people would be tracking their pizzas online as they're being made (not to mention a pizza ordering API.) Now all we need are smart boxes and Deliverators fearful of being on the wrong end of Uncle Enzo's switchblade.

obsessive and a little nuts...i could see it coming in handy if the pie delivery boy isn't knocking on your door after 45 minutes, but this pizza tracking thing is one step from just going down there and mushing your face against the glass, hot breath steaming up the window and creaping out the employees...

I often order pizza online via PizzaPizza.ca
Neat trick: if you leave the "order confirmation" window open in Gmail then you will see gmail's javascript countdown of how many minutes until the pizza was ordered, which let's you know if you've hit the "40 minutes or its free" guarantee.

Dominos are the guys who made it, right...Isn't it just using the dominos "pizza meter" that you can always access online?
Thanks anyway though. Ordering pizza online i sick.

I'm not sure if this is a widespread phenomenon or just due to the city I was in, but the Domino's Pizza Tracker may be an elaborate ruse.
Some friends and I have a study hall between 10:30 and lunch, so we figured, "Hey, let's order a pizza today." The website said they opened at ten, so "We'll order online!"
So we watched in glee as the pizza tracker told us how "Ryan just put your pizza in the oven" and "Your pizza is waiting in a HotFresh Pouch for delivery." Based on the messages, the pizza should have arrived by 10:45.
I got a call at 11:10 from a guy saying the store opened at 11 and he just put the pizzas in the oven. You can't actually order when the store is closed, but the hours were posted wrong on the website and it let us do it early.

Just thought I would respond to this thread since we ordered dominos for our entire office on friday to play withthe tracker system after reading this post.
Well, monday morning and the reviews are in: EVERYONE who ate the pizza on friday, spent saturday on the toilet. (and 2 people took a sick day.)
Thanks Dominos!
