Best Online File Sharing Services
Posted by Adam Pash at 2:00 AM on May 9, 2008

Whether you're trying to share megabytes worth of music with a friend or send an important document to a coworker, nothing outshines a fast, easy-to-use file-sharing service. On Tuesday we asked you to share your favourite file-sharing service, and over 200 nominations later, we've rounded up the five most popular services. Hit the jump for a look at the top five, and then cast your vote for the ultimate file-sharing service.
Box.net
Popular for its simple interface and large feature set, file-sharing site Box.net provides 1GB of free space. Users love it for its collaboration tools and open format, which enables fun features like mounting your web space on your desktop and web service support, and RSS feeds. Like many others in this Hive Five, Box.net provides direct links to files so users aren't held up at a landing page to get their download. Box.net's biggest drawback is its free account's filesize limit, which sits at a rather paltry 10MB. Drop.io
Renown by users for its simplicity and impressive interface, Drop.io (original post) doesn't require registration for use and specialises in document sharing, offering built-in previews of everything from images to PDFs. The innovative service has recently added a couple of new features, like free sending and receiving of faxes and voice recording. The free account has a 100MB storage limit, so unless you're ready to spend some cash, Drop.io is best-suited for smaller files. MediaFire
Users love unlimited storage, and MediaFire (original post) offers just that. The service is free, offers unlimited disk space, and requires no sign-up to use any of the site's features. The files you upload, however, can only be up to 100MB in size. Windows Live SkyDrive
With an impressive 5GB of free storage space, Windows Live SkyDrive (original post) is one new product out of Redmond that's quickly found a place in users' hearts. SkyDrive works on a folder-based system, emphasising the ability to organise your files in personal, shared, and public folders. SkyDrive requires a Windows Live account to get started, individual uploads are limited to 50MB. FolderShare
The cross-platform FolderShare (original post) is more of a file syncing tool than it is a traditional file-sharing service. (In fact, it's what we used to sync Firefox extensions across the internet.) FolderShare lovers emphasise the ease with which they can share a folder on their desktop, then quickly sync the folder's contents to a friend's computer. All you have to do is set it up, then any file you drag into a shared folder is automatically replicated on computers you're sharing folders with. Now that you've seen what the best have to offer, it's time to cast your vote for the ultimate file sharing service.
Honorable mentions this week go to DropBox, the private beta syncing tool that's got tonnes of early adopters salivating (just check out the video demo); RapidShare, the age-old file-sharing service that most people love to hate (and love); and, of course, a regular web server, which you'll pay for, unless you set up your own personal home web server at no cost.
Let's hear your thoughts on your favourite online file-sharing service—whether or not it made the top 5—in the comments.

I'm sorry that more people haven't been exposed to Dropbox. That application hassingle-handedly saved my wife's computer twice in 2 months.
The application syncs to their web-server, and loads on any machine that is invited to that folder. The revision history a-la-google-docs saves you from yourself. Also, the built in "restore folder" feature allows you to load up your dropbox on any machine.
This 5 gig file synching demon is the winner, hands down. Foldershare's file limit is too restricting and I was always disappointed with the Box.net interface.
Dropbox's integration with the Window Shell allows even the biggest "tool-ios" to stumble through its implementation.

Rapidshare!!!!
It's the most commonly used one for illegal ;) filesharing, and therefore the best!
Its limit is no problem for those using the rapidshare uploading program, and neither is it a problem downloading using FlashGet.
I admit though, for quick, easy, file sharing with a friend, mediafire is much better.
But the sheer repository of files on the rapidshare servers, makes it the best.

I haven't had a chace to play with the other file sharing services, but I totally love DropBox.
It a sweet and innovative design, and it automatically synchs your computer to the net. Awesome!

Has anyone checked out Yoics? It basically turns your computer into a server accessable through a web page. You can view streaming video from your home computer, share folder, broadcast your TVersity server, and connect to your computer through RealVNC. It was in beta last time I used it. I had to stop because work started to block it.

I guess I was sleeping on Tuesday. I use box.net and Diino for file sharing, and Mozy for backups.
Diino is rather nice. They provide an e-mail address, 2 Gb free space, a backup client and probably some other stuff.
Diino access is through a client software that is portable (Windows only). It can be installed to a Flash drive, and run without Admin privileges. They also have a downloadable .zip archive that can be used directly after decompression, so you don't need to install and copy the application folder to your Flash drive.
All email remains on the server. The client downloads headers when you log in, and then loads and displays those messages you wish to access.
Client displays your file/folder structure, and lets you download/upload files. Don't know of a filesize limit offhand.
My favorite Diino feature is the ability to send someone an email with a time-limited link to a file. Recipient of the message can open the link and download the file without needing a Diino account or client of their own. After 24 hours, the link automatically expires. I've used this to "deliver" files to people without managing a shared folder.

I use MediaFire because the wait to get a download is 0 (none of that forced waiting like at MegaUpload and Rapidfire). It manages all my files properly. It tells how many people have downloaded what. Very useful.

I work for a company that just released a new file sharing tool. It has much more features than the ones listed here and has lots of tagging tools.
For instance, you can share all files that have a particular tag in a single click.
You can sign up for free with no credit card.

A lot of comments talk about different uses and determining which file sharing service is the best depends on the use, and I sure agree with that.
I think it should have been separated into:
MUSIC: ZippyShare (MP3 preview and lightning fast downloads)
PERSONAL DOCUMENTS: SkyDrive (50mb file limit and 5gb total)
WORK DOCUMENTS: Google Docs (I have my reasons ;)
VIDEOS: I do not use any, but does YouTube counts?
Just adding my grain of salt...

2008-05-01 -- Leaving Beta…Version 1.0 Coming Soon!
Thank you for your continued use and support of ADrive. We have been working hard to get ready for the release of ADrive version 1.0!. ADrive v1.0 will have a new look, and also many new enhanced features. Look forward to: a backup client, WebDAV, SSL encryption, file history (snapshot) & file history recovery, offsite backup, and additional storage plans. Many of these new features will require you to sign up for a paid account. If you currently have a free 50GB account, you can continue to enjoy that free service; the paid services will be an addition to our current basic plan offering. I have to put in my vote for Upload Jockey if you want to make sure whatever you are uploading stays extra safe, especially if it is...*cough*...less then right to be uploading it..? The site has a 100mb per file upload limit but by uploading it there it uploads the file to like six or seven major uploading services (RapidShare, Deposit Files, etc) then pops you out a link that lists them all nice and pretty.

I'm on DropBox, which is nice, but will be better once you can sync folders outside of the dropbox folder.
Drop.io is great, but still can't handle files with non-western characters (e.g. Chinese filenames).
But I'm surprised that Wua.la hasn't received more attention. It is like a p2p version of dropbox. It lacks the syncing features, but it offers global search across all shared folders (for all users), as well as the ability to get more storage for each 1GB you share with the net.

FTP will always remain THE protocol for big files, I think.
For up to 1 MB I'm using old email, 1-5 MB I prefer to use Wikisend.com. It's one of the fastes file sharing service I've ever used. I always choose the 'file lifetime' 2 days. After days they delete my file. Great service... until the first teenager hackers come over and put up their illegal stuff there :(
More than 5 mb makes more sense to put it on a ftp server, I think.

I have used both drop.io and Skydrive.
I enjoy skydrive, but the fact that users need a windows Live ID turns some people off. Drop.io on the other hand is easy, no signing into anything. Put up a file, and send the link to someone. Password protect it if you want, or leave it open.
Any other features than that are unneeded, because its only really needed for a quick file send. If it needs to be robust or permanant, there are many other means to do so than these sites.

@marcok:
I agree somewhat about FTP. In my experimenting it has out performed HTTP more often than not.
In previous web apps I have written we used Java applets to seamlessly include FTP into the experience.
Unfortunately, I have also seen public WiFi spots block FTP, and large corporate networks throttle it.
The new application I am working on (www.wonderfile.net) uses Amazon's S3 storage service for HTTP uploads and downloads. I have been very impressed with the performance.
Amazon has done a great job of maximizing HTTP's performance for moving large files across the tubes.

I also recommend ADrive. Lots of space, nice interface, and very little limitations. I would not recommend MediaMax. I stopped using it after realizing that I could not download some of my files. MediaMax lets you upload files for free, but downloading files larger than, I think, 20 MB requires a paid account; this is so lame.

I'll post what I need, maybe you guys can tell the best tool:
At home I use RadioShark to record a couple different radio shows. I also record Sirius for 3-4 hours daily. All the recordings are MP3s which go onto an external connected to my Mac Mini.
At work, I want to be able to access these files. On a daily ongoing basis.
Work IT wants no streaming, and have iTunes blocked, even for podcast downloading. Plus I can't receive any FM/AM signals. So I'm just dying for "live" audio content.

Every website that offers free file hosting doesn't show advertisements so I am curious to know how do they run their business? or in other words, why this charity? How secure are your files on these servers?

@spifl: I have sent you an invite. But I should say, I find your email weird. officenote.com does not open any page, even though some one has bought this domain (whois database) and has it protected by Nextrio. Anyways... junk email or not, I sent you one invite. Now I have one last invite left.

I use Amazon S3 for both backup and file sharing. It's not free, but the $0.30/month they charge me for my 2G files is a good deal for me, and the files are also viewable to download in any browser (if I choose to make them public).
I use S3Fox, but there are a bunch of tools using S3, both GUI and commandline. A partial list is at [jeremy.zawodny.com]

I've tried most of these services listed and they are good, but the one I really like is called Memeo Share. It's in limited Beta right now, but I managed to get an invite. It allows you to send your photos and videos directly to your sharing circle's desktop. I couldn't believe it when I tried it. It was simple and my family around the country now has high resolution files delivered directly to their conputer desktop. If you can get an invite you should try it. www.memeo.com

Surprised no one has mentioned sendspace.com. I figured it would be a deadringer in on this one but perhaps my needs are specialized. Sendspace allows you to send files up to 300 megs in size. This may not be important for everyone, but as a frequent radio show guest on various stations and host on one, this tool is invaluable as my shows get sent as MP3's to various radio stations quite a bit.
Also as a record label owner we use the service to send around masters etc. These are not small files, quite often over the 100 meg threshold of most services.

One of my favorites and mostly unknown is [www.turboupload.com] - it's quite fast for download and uploads are quite zippy.
Oh also there's rarhost.com for rar files, it shows the contents of the rar archive. Not my favorite, but innovative.
Give TurboUpload a try, I really like it and hope that it sticks around hence why I'm sharing it.
