See Lifehacker Posts on Eastern Time
US-centric: Firefox with Greasemonkey only: Two of the Lifehacker editors may reside on the West coast of the US, but a lot of the US readers are on Eastern time, and that means you'd probably like to see our posts timestamped that way. Now you can—with a Greasemonkey user script I just threw together. With Greasemonkey installed, using Firefox, install the Lifehacker on Eastern Time user script.
It will change all the Pacific time zone post times on Lifehacker and other West coast blogs (Valleywag, io9, and Defamer) to Eastern. This script is only a first release alpha, but once I get any bugs worked out I'll put out versions for additional time zones. Requests, bug reports, Javascript expertise, and suggestions all welcome in the comments.

How about Lifehacker on Newfoundland time? :-)

This would probably be easier if you translated from ET to UMT first and then from UMT to whichever location people are in. As other locations will have different daylight savings behaviour it will be easier to go from a standard time like UMT to a local time with localised daylight savings etc.
At least I think so!

Why isn't there an option to set my time zone when I sign up?

Another option, Gina, is to allow me in to the Lifehacker gang. I live in Philly and am on the computer at 7.30am sharp (Philly time) every day, and I'd be happy to contribute stories and/or moderate posts.

@Rhywun: exactly the point I came here to make. I already have enough GM scripts running--I don't want yet another, especially for something that should happen at the server level... just my $0.02.

nthing Rhywun's post. This is an issue that should be handled server-side, and is by many other websites. It's a standard feature in most web forum software.

@earth2marsh: I'll third that! It's not hard to localize time server side.

I agree with the others here that this seems like something that should be handled by the system. I was wondering why I can't set my time zone and see post times in my local time. Most web boards and such that I've seen let users set their time zone and then adjust the times of posts automatically. Is there a reason this isn't being done on the LifeHacker system?

Yes it would! But as far as I can see, it's not that easy in Javascript. Would love to be proved wrong, though!
"Why isn't there an option to set my time zone when I sign up? "
Honestly? Because it hasn't been made a priority by the People Who Design How The Sites Work. I've asked several times, and it's on a list somewhere. This is my stopgap solution.
OBVIOUSLY this would be better-handled server side, but I don't build this place, I just write it.
Now, can we get back to the issue at hand? Does the user script work for you? :)

Can this script be extended to work for the time stamps on comments too?

@Gina Trapani: Thanks for hacking your own system for us, Gina!
I tried this script in Safari using GreaseKit (formerly CreamMonkey), and it doesn't work for me.. at least not if I'm supposed to be seeing what's in the screenshot..
Your "Lifehacker Quote in Reply" user script works like a charm though :)

Works like it should be me, granted I spend half the year on Central and half on Eastern, so this will work for me half the time :p

Works perfectly for changing the post time! FYI the times already show up in ET through FeedDemon; I guess the RSS feed works differently.
However, I just realized that it does not change any of the times that people have posted comments. For instance, CaptainChickenPants comment still says 4:48AM in reply to your original post that was made at 7:00AM ET. I think the comments are when I run into a time zone issue question most frequently. Any chance of adding something like that?
I'd do it myself, but I'm only just starting to learn Java!

Geez, maybe some of the critics could show some appreciation. Gina did not have to write a script or do anything for the readers. But she did, and for that, we should be appreciative (whether or not it's the best case scenario).

Not moaning, not moaning, not moaning, not moaning; But:
Would it be theoretically possible to get a GMT version, or to specify where I'd need to change the JS?
Keep up the good work Gina, nice thing to do for the readers

@samhealer42: That's my goal, to make it as extensible and universal as possible. So, it's on the list!
Uh, if anyone has an experience converting timezones in Javascript, please contact me! tips at lifehacker.com

@samhealer42: Until the script gets an upgrade you could change the variable TZ_offset to the time difference between US and GMT and then give it a name with TZ_name.
i.e.
var TZ_offset=8;
var TZ_name="GMT";
Watch out for daylight savings though - states on Pacific time and the UK are both currently on daylight savings but if the summer end dates don't match up it'll need readjusting.

Maybe I'm alone here... but I'm not really interested in what time a post was published... it's either useful and relevant to me, or not.
And if I was... Google reader tells me that an article was postd x hours ago, or x days ago which is good enough for me (i.e. it's probably not worth commenting on something more than a few days old... or is it?).
