Keep Tabs on Your Web Presence with Addict-O-Matic
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 11:00 PM on May 8, 2008
Let's face facts—you're probably Googling yourself on a regular basis, whether for pure ego satisfaction or monitoring of your professional image online. New search aggregator Addict-O-Matic just happens to be great for seeing how you "look" online, as it focuses on returning results from the top social networking sites, Web 2.0 services, and blog-watching services. Of course, it's also a great tool for monitoring a topic or another person across the web's wide expanse, but once you add Addict-O-Matic to your Firefox search bar options or just as a bookmark, you know you'll be heading back to satisfy your online-mirror-checking fix.

I rather not have the internet know who i am thank you. The more anonymous you are on the web, the better.

Why not just add a Google Alert ([www.google.com]) search your name and have it email you "as-it-happens"?

"That site is toast."
@bms: 2 minutes in and I am still waiting for the results to display, definitely down/slow atm
"Anyone Googling themselves "on a regular basis" may need a bit of a vacation."
@Joe Alien: Its enjoyable at times, but doing it regularly means you either blog a lot or got issues

@boredcollegekid:
I do it like once every 2 months because I'm a college kid how does the normal college fun stuff and I just don't want anything coming back and haunting me when I graduate and go in for an interview at some huge engineering firm......gotta protect my future image.

I too waited and waited and waited and nada.
I for one would like to be able to see what people can find on me--part of controlling my image, for the same reasons superbryant mentioned and that boredcollegekid should be thinking about. What people find on you can hinder you in all sorts of ways ranging from some employer not hiring you because they saw "republican" or a certain book on your profile to making a poor impression on a potential new client, etc. You just never know what people think and having an understanding of what is accessible about you is important.

I entered my name, clicked submit, and waited. And waited. And waited.

Having the same name as a b-list celebrity is awesome for anonymity. Anyone searching for me on Google would have to wade through tons of irrelevant search results first.

Keep Tabs on Your Web Presence with Addict-O-Matic Employers--30% to 70%, depending on whose estimates you read--routinely do web searches on the applicants for their positions. More common in IT, I'm told, although it's becoming increasingly frequent in other fields. You can try removing stuff you don't want to appear, but that can be like calling back the reruns of 'I Love Lucy' when they're already 50 light years away. Or there are people who will advise you on how to bring to the top the things you want to turn up. At minimum, knowing there's stuff out there you wish weren't there might give you a sporting chance to explain it in an interview. bn

@superbryant88: Googling doesn't protect you from things coming back haunting your career, no matter how regularly you google... There is no escape!

We had a brief technical issue which seems to be resolved. Apologies to any lifehackers affected and thanks for the kind post.
