Your Co-workers' Kids Help You Get Things Done
Developer David Heinemeier Hansson says he loves working with family people, because when there's a daily deadline—like his co-workers having to get home to their kids—people's jobs get done during the workday, period. [via]

I like working with people with outside obligations - children, civic duties, etc. - because they seem to be more focused on the task at hand and are less likely to procrastinate.
I am so busy with my life that I can't bear the thought of wasting work time - which would take me away from my family, friends, community service or exercise routine.

I used to work at a publishing company with six different magazines. Our production manager had a little boy. I never worked past five thirty. Never.

Wow, I totally misunderstood the title. My dad works for a spin-off from AMD, and being a first year mech eng college student with programming experience, he's had me do little projects for him and his coworkers. His coworkers have also picked my mind for things like desktop search in Linux.
So that's what I originally *thought* this was about. But I guess making them work faster works too...

@Jason Fitzpatrick: Ditto, Jason. Just understand that X indefinitely regresses to 0 as the child ages... :)

I work with several people who have children, and while this is true of most of them, the one who it isn't true of ruins everything. She never works more than 6 hours a day, and always dumps her unfinished work on someone else (me, of course). On top of her coming in at 9:30 and leaving at 3, she always runs "errands" during the workday that keep her out of the office for at least an hour.

I've found that having a family/child has greatly increased my productivity. Prior to the child, my time always seemed amorphous and infinite. Now with a child I understand that X amount of stuff, and only X amount of stuff can be completed during her nap time. I've learned to make use of small blocks of time more efficiently, and to allocate larger blocks of time to more important uses.

I'm not a family guy, but after work is when I slink back to the geek cave and do all the other stuff that's been lurking in the back of my mind.
Stay in at work? No thanks... not unless it can rival the geek cave, heh.
I like getting things done during working hours, to the point where I sometimes pull weight for other people even if I shouldn't.
